ROCHESTER, N.Y. — Geneva’s Twins reached the New York Collegiate Baseball League semi-finals in 2012. Led by Greg Coman (Setauket, N.Y./Harvard), Tre Edwards (Moore, OK/Murray State College), Fernando Garcia (Jacksonville, FL/Murray State College via Arlington Country Day HS) and Jake Shields (Hamilton, OH/Case Western Reserve) the Twins have their sights set on the post-season in 2014.
Coman (LHP 5-10 175 FR) made a dozen appearances for the Crimson this past spring. The freshman went 1-1 with 15 strike outs and five walks in 13.2 innings pitched. The southpaw throws 87-88 mph and can touch 89 with a breaking ball at 70-72 and a developing change-up. He can pitch on both sides of the plate and get in on hitters.
“He struggled a little bit early as some freshman do,” noted Harvard head coach Bill Decker. “Down the stretch, he threw pretty well. The thing Greg needs to continue to work on is being effective both sides, pounding the zone and holding runners on. The kid is a competitor. He can get after it. You know what you’re going to get from him day in and day out as far as work work ethic. He’s going to be a bulldog.”
Edwards (Switch-Hitting SS 5-10 186 FR Throws Right) redshirted this past season. After signing to play at Arkansas of the Southeastern Conference in the fall of 2013, he transferred to Murray State, a junior college. He earned All-State honors hitting .370 with 14 doubles, 33 RBI and 10 stolen bases during his senior season at Southmoore High School in Moore, Oklahoma.
Garcia (OF 6-2 195 HS Bats Right/ Throws Right) is rated as a top 300 prospect for the upcoming MLB Draft. He runs a 6.55 in the 60-yard dash with good arm strength. Garcia earned Florida All-Region honors.
Shields (RHP 6-4 200 FR) went 6-2 in 10 appearances (eight starts) for the Spartans. In 47 innings of work he fanned 47, walked 22 and finished with an ERA of 3.06. The right-hander throws 85-89 mph and commands a curve ball along with a change-up and splitter.
“He pitched great for us this year,” Case Western coach Matt Englander noted. “He’s thrown a lot of good games against a lot of good teams, and we expect him to have a great career for us.”
