Despite a complete-game effort from Scott Diamond, the Wings offense mustered a season-low two hits as the Columbus Clippers finished off the four-game sweep of the Red Wings with a 5-1 victory Thursday night at Huntington Park.
It is the first four-game sweep against the Red Wings since Indianapolis took all four games at Frontier Field last August.
Trevor Bauer (4-0), the Indians top pitching prospect, allowed just two hits over 7 2/3 innings yielding just one unearned run on Thursday. The hard-throwing right-hander struck out nine while walking two.
Over the four-game set, the Wings were held to just eight runs as they hit just .151 (10-for-126) as a team and .167 (4-for-24) with runners in scoring position. Rochester entered the series coming off a season high 12-run, 17-hit attack in Sunday’s homestand finale and were batting a league-best .285 on the season when the series began.
Trailing 1-0, the Red Wings pulled even in the fifth on an Eric Farris RBI single to right that scored Dan Rohlfing from second as the Wings snapped a 14-inning scoreless drought dating back to game two of the series on Tuesday. Farris’ base hit was the first hit of the game for Rochester.
However, the Wings couldn’t keep the momentum as the Clippers answered right back off Diamond in the bottom half of the inning.
After a pair of singles to begin the inning, Jesus Aguilar ripped a two-run double into the gap in left-center to put the Clippers back in front, 3-1. Two batters later, Giovanny Urshela took a Diamond offering deep to left field for a two-run homer that staked Columbus to the 5-1 lead.
Despite suffering the loss, Diamond (2-4) turned in an eight-inning complete game allowing five runs on nine hits and three walks with four strikeouts. After allowing the two-run homer to Urshela, Diamond set down 10 of the last 12 batters he faced.
But the Wings’ bats couldn’t muster any offense to get back in it. After Bauer was lifted with two outs in the eighth, reliever Mike Zagurski walked back-to-back batters in front of Deibinson Romero as the Wings tried to rally. However, the Red Wings third baseman popped up a 3-1 offering from the southpaw to end the threat.
Rochester will look to right the ship in Toledo as they open a four-game series against the Mud Hens (Tigers) on Friday night at 7:00 p.m.RHP Yohan Pino (5-0, 0.84), fresh off his complete-game shutout on Saturday, will get the start for the Wings.
