There comes a moment for any team with championship aspirations where a season takes direction or meaning. Many times that moment occurs during practice and away from the camera.
Sometimes it happens for fans to see.
Billy Baron‘s buzzer beater Tuesday night which lifted Canisius past Elon might have been that moment.
That this happened so early in the season for the Canisius Golden Griffins doesn’t matter. It might have been right on time.
After winning 20 games a year ago for the first time in more than a decade, Billy Baron let it be known that he intended the Griffs to play a role in Selection Sunday next March.
Then came a less-than-inspired 71-66 victory over South Dakota in the opener. Five nights later, Canisius fell to their long-time rival St. Bonaventure, 86-64 in a game that wasn’t that close.
Monday night Canisius had a chance for redemption at Rutgers. Instead the Griffs looked barely capable of hanging with the Scarlet Knights in a 66-51 defeat.
Canisius looked destined for a third straight setback Tuesday night. Then this happened:
Canisius faced the task of an uphill battle just four games into the season. With one shot Billy Baron changed everything. Maybe the Griffs have found a source of emotion they can carry throughout the season.
