Counting down to tipoff and previewing the incoming freshmen of the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference with a look at the Marist Red Foxes.
Marist finished 10-21 (six MAAC wins) in 2012-13. But Jeff Bower has returned to Marist after spending the last 18 years in a variety of capacities in the NBA. Bower welcomes two freshmen to Poughkeepsie: Kentrall Brooks and Nick Colletta.
Kentrall Brooks F 6-8, 200 Bronx, N.Y./ St. Anthony (N.J.)
A skilled forward from Bronx, N.Y., Brooks began his high school career at Christ the King before transferring to St. Anthony (N.J.) before his sophomore season… At St. Anthony, he played under the guidance of legendary head coach Bob Hurley… As a Friar at St. Anthony, Brooks went undefeated as a junior and helped the team to the number one ranking nationally… He played his senior year along three-other D1 committed players… Outside of school, Brooks has competed on the AAU circuit with the New York Lightning.
What they’re saying about Kentrall Brooks – Jay Gomes/NJHoops.com: “He’s long and athletic. He has the upside. He runs the floor very well, and he gets upstairs. He’s a quick leaper. He’s never been a big scorer at St. Anthony’s or the AAU circuit, but he can be an effective rebounder and interior defender.”
Steve Keller/ National Recruiting Report: “He’s got some hop and some ability. He’s kind of raw.”
Allen Rubin/ Hoop Scoop: “He’s very long, a stretch four. He’s a mid-range shooter, a good rebounder. He gets off his feet quick.”
Nick Colletta G 6-5, 190 Glendora, CA/ Glendora
Colletta was named one of the top sophomores in the state of California in the 2010-11 season, when he averaged 24.2 points and 7.7 rebounds per game… That year, he was named All-CIF Division 2A First Team, earned MVP honors of the Winter Tip-Off Classic after scoring 30 points in the championship game, and had a career-best 38 points in a game… Colletta missed much of his junior season and all of his senior season due to a back injury… Colletta is a product of Glendora High School, which ranks in the top five percent of the country’s most academically successful high schools… Glendora produced former NBA players Casey Jacobsen (five-year NBA career, currently playing in Germany) and Tracy Murray (11-year NBA career).
What they’re saying about Nick Colletta – Steve Keller/ National Recruiting Report: “He can shoot some. He will contribute down the road for Marist.”
