Canisius College senior guard Billy Baron has earned a pair of preseason honors, as he has named the MAAC Preseason Player of the Year by Lindy’s Sports College Basketball Preview and the MAAC’s Top Player in the Sporting News College Basketball Preview. Both publications are on newsstands now.
Baron led the Golden Griffins in scoring average last season with his 17.2 points per game, and his 5.0 assists per game led the MAAC in 2012-13. The East Greenwich, R.I., native scored a total of 584 points, which ranks seventh on the school’s single-season scoring chart and stands as the most points for a Griff since Ray Hall scored 628 points during the 1984-85 campaign. He ended his first year in a Canisius uniform ranked 78th in the nation in scoring average, 62nd nationally in assists per game, 92nd in the country in free-throw percentage (82.4 percent) and 126th in assist-to-turnover ratio (1.8). He was a key force in Canisius’ 15-game turnaround from 2011-12 to 2012-13, and he earned All-MAAC First-Team honors in addition to being named the CollegeInsider.com Mid-Major MVP.
The Griffs are the preseason favorite to win the MAAC title, according to Lindy’s Sports College Basketball Preview. Baron was also recognized by that magazine as an all-league first-team choice, the league’s best playmaker and the conference’s most versatile player. In the Sporting News College Basketball Preview, he was tabbed as a preseason all-league selection and the Blue and Gold were picked to finish third in the conference.
Canisius will officially open the 110th season in program history Monday, Nov. 11, when the Blue and Gold plays host to South Dakota in the Koessler Athletic Center. Game time for that contest is set for 7 p.m. Season tickets for the 26-game men’s and women’s home slate are now on sale through the Canisius Ticket Office by calling 716-888-2885 between from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., Monday-Friday.
