The comings and goings of NYCBL players past and present.
Since June, Bostick (Webster ’11) has pounded MWL pitching
A hot streak?
The tear that Snappers second baseman Christopher Bostick has been on since early June can’t really be called a “streak” anymore.
Bostick is hitting .385 since June 1 with seven of his 11 home runs for the season since that point. He recently sat down with the Daily News to talk about everything from his upbringing in Rochester, N.Y., to his play of late.
BDN: What was it like growing up in Rochester?
Bostick: “I had an older sister and two older brothers. Both of my brothers were big into sports. I was into everything from a very young age. Basketball, football, baseball, pretty much everything but soccer. There are a lot of families out there where the kids are all playing and the dad is the coach, and that’s what it was like for me. I was always following my brothers around and going to their practices.”
Bostick (Webster ’11) motivated to succeed
Christopher Bostick has worn No. 20 since his high school days, but the number that drives him is 44.
That’s the round in which the Oakland A’s finally drafted the Aquinas Institute graduate two years ago. It’s also a round that no longer exists. In 2012, the draft was reduced from 50 to 40 rounds.
“When I got picked, I got a phone call and then I didn’t hear from anyone for two months,” the second baseman says. “It seemed like they weren’t even planning on signing me. They thought I was going to college.”
Fiorito (Syracuse Salt Cats ’11-’12) lives his Yankees dreams
One thousand two hundred and thirty-eight names were called in the 2012 Major League Baseball draft. Dan Fiorito was not one of them.
But last month, something that had been inconceivable when the draft ended finally occurred.
Crabbe (Red Wings ’08) tosses shutout inning in Southern League All-Star Game
Blue Wahoos pitchers Tim Crabbe and Shaun Ellis both got in the game in successive innings. Crabbe worked a scoreless fifth allowing just a hit. Ellis shut out the North Division in the sixth inning with a strikeout and a walk.
Locastro (Syracuse Jr. Chiefs ’12) goes up-tempo
Tim Locastro is embracing a brisker tempo as he begins his professional career with the Bluefield Blue Jays. The middle infielder out of Division III Ithaca College has been off and running at a pretty good clip in the Appalachian League.
“Everything is a little faster pace,” Locastro said.
Locastro has shown the ability to stay up to speed, producing a .328 batting average through 20 games, including a four-hit performance July 10 in Burlington. He’s also stolen seven bases in eight attempts and walked seven times while only striking out four.

Asuaje (Oneonta ’11) turning season around with Lowell
Power is not going to be part of his game, so if Asuaje is hitting for average, drawing walks, and avoiding strikeouts, he’s essentially figured out a level. What he’s done the last 10 games is the kind of thing that you should be on the lookout for, but, of course, over a stretch that’s larger than 10 games.

Thielbar (Little Falls ’07) quietly making name for himself Caleb Thielbar has always been pretty quiet. He lets his pitching speak for itself. “You gotta be at your best every single time you go out there her. So, I mean, I guess it’s just a matter of sticking with routine and trusting what you have.” Caleb Thielbar says. “I love the guy. I mean, he’s quiet, quiet kid, you know, goes in there and competes. Doesn’t try to be somebody he’s not. He kind of keeps to himself. You kinda got initiate the conversation, but once you get him talking, you know, he’s a great guy.” Twins Reliever Brian Duensing says.
Thielbar rides impressive streak
ST. PETERSBURG — Lefty reliever Caleb Thielbar entered Monday’s series opener at Tropicana Field with a streak of 19 2/3 scoreless innings, the longest active mark in the Majors, and he extended that streak to an even 20 innings with a big strikeout against Luke Scott with a runner on third in the seventh inning.
Mets option Lutz (Hornell ’07) to Triple-A Las Vegas NEW YORK – The Mets have recalled reliever Gonzalez Germen from Triple-A Las Vegas and optioned corner infielder Zach Lutz, the team announced today. The Mets revealed last night that Germen would join the team today and a corresponding transaction would be made. A move, however, had not been made when Collins spoke to the media and he cryptically said a move would not be made “for a while.” Read more…

Stellar season may lead to big-league call up for Romero (Glens Falls ’08)
Stefen Romero got into baseball for the snow cones.
Growing up on Tucson’s South Side, Romero found his love for baseball playing T-ball for Sunnyside Little League at Mission Manor Park.
“I couldn’t wait for the games to be done, and then I’d sprint to the concession stand and get a snow cone,” Romero recalled. “That’s what it’s all about. People forget that baseball is a game. It’s not a job.”
Now 24 years old and one step away from the major leagues, Romero plays the game the exact same way he did for Sunnyside Little League.
Darnell (Amsterdam ’08) hurls six shutout as Red Wings take over wild card lead
Logan Darnell was on cruise control with the Double-A New Britain Rock Cats the first half of this season. But he had been stuck on neutral since his promotion to the Red Wings one month ago.
The left-hander needed a good outing Monday and he delivered, tossing six shutout innings as the Red Wings moved into the International League’s wild-card lead with a 3-1 win over the Lehigh Valley IronPigs at Frontier Field.
Baker (Mohawk Valley ’10) has no regrets after release
Pitcher Garrett Baker has been chasing his major-league dream for three years.
Now that it’s over, the last of Rome’s baseball-playing Baker boys has no regrets, none whatsoever.
Three minor-league seasons were not a waste of time.
