ROCHESTER, NY – One plays on a team jockeying for post-season position at the top of the New York Collegiate Baseball League. The other is trying to keep his team out of the cellar. Both earned NYCBL weekly honors.
Aaron Pigna (Syracuse JR Chiefs/Ave Maria University) earned NYCBL Hitter of the Week (7/8-7/14) while Dwayne Snider (Rochester Ridgemen /Texas Lutheran University) took Pitcher of the Week.
To say Pigna (13/27 (1 2B), 9 r, 6 RBI, 4 bb, 7/11 SB, .481 AVG, .576 OBP) has been important in the Junior Chiefs’ recent hot streak is an understatement. In the past week, Syracuse has scored 59 runs with a record of 6-3. One out of every four (15/59) runs the Junior Chiefs scored were the product of Pigna’s bat. The righty shortstop now leads the NYCBL in SB, AVG, and OBP.
Sabermetric: Pigna reached base an astounding 19 times in 33 plate appearances last week, making his OBP a stellar .576 for the same stretch (9 games).
It’s hard for a pitcher to win an “of the week” award while playing in just one game that week, harder still when it resulted in a no decision. Snider (9.0 IP, 0 r, 2 h, 2 bb, 11 k, 0.00 ERA, 0.44 WHIP) was just that good; the righty hurler tossed nine no-hit innings against the Silversmiths on Friday. Unfortunately for Snider, Sherrill’s Kevin Carpentier (Finger Lakes CC) also decided to throw nine no-hit innings as well in one of the most incredible occurrences in NYCBL history. Both starters lost their no-hitters in the 10th, but Rochester spared Snider some anguish by winning the game after he left.
Sabermetric: For the outing, Snider held batters to an average of .071, allowing just two hits in 28 at bats. Combined with just two walks, Snider’s WHIP of 0.44 was even more stellar.
