ONEONTA, NY – Jordan Hanlon (Elmhurst) needed only 95 pitches to throw a complete-game en route to a 4-1 Geneva Red Wings (12-12) victory over the Oneonta Outlaws (15-10) in New York Collegiate Baseball League action Wednesday night at Damaschke Park.
Hanlon had great stuff allowing just one run on seven hits while striking out five. With his second win of the season, the right-hander was able to help get his Red Wings back to the .500 mark.
“I was just going up and establishing fastballs and letting my defense help take care of me,” Hanlon said of his fine performance. “I worked on [my off-speed pitches] a lot this summer and was able to change it up and change up my approach so I was confident out there.”
On the losing end was Outlaws starter Malcolm Purdy (Grand Canyon), who was charged with four runs on eight hits over five innings. Zach Moreau (Grambling St) was able to put an end to the Geneva scoring as he threw four brilliant innings of relief work, allowing only two hits while striking out seven, but the Oneonta bats were unable to get much of anything going against Hanlon.
Offensively, the Red Wings were able to get to Purdy in the fifth inning. With the bases loaded, Scott Shields (Cuesta) doubled down the right field line, scoring Brandon Costa (Concord) and John Dockins (Kutztown). Later in the inning, yesterday’s Home Run Derby champion Andrew Gronski (Case Western Reserve) added on an RBI single, giving Geneva its 4-0 advantage.
Oneonta got their lone run on an eighth inning RBI double from Jake Levine (Brown), breaking up Hanlon’s shutout bid. The Illinois native was then able to retire the next two Outlaw batters on a fly out and a ground out to escape any further trouble.
With their victory Wednesday night, the Red Wings move into a 3-team tie with the Syracuse Salt Cats and the Wellsville Nitros for fifth place in the NYCBL standings. Meanwhile, the Outlaws drop to third place, now behind both the Olean Oilers and the Syracuse Jr Chiefs.
Tomorrow, July 11th, the Red Wings head to Syracuse to take on the Salt Cats (12-12), while the Outlaws host the Rochester Ridgemen (9-15) at Damaschke Field.
