WEBSTER, NY — The Geneva Red Wings scored two runs in the third inning and went on to knock off the Rochester Ridgemen 4-0 in a rain-shortened New York Collegiate Baseball League game at Basket Road Field Wednesday night.
Center fielder Zak Worsley (North Park U) got things started for the Red Wings with a scorching one-out RBI double to right plating Dustin Stuck (Alvernia U) for a 1-0 Red Wings lead.
Worsley stole third and Casey Fox (Haverford College) tacked on another run with a sacrifice fly scoring Worsley from third for the 2-0 Geneva advantage.
Stuck worked a one-out walk and stole second before coming home on Worsley’s two-bagger.
Geneva added a pair of insurance runs in the seventh without needing a hit.
Before exiting the game Carl Buddin (Brunswick CC) issued base on balls to Vernon Trice III (Oglethorpe) and Stuck.
Clint Brown (Mary Hardin-Baylor) came in relief but struggled and walked Worsley before forcing in a run with a walk to Fox. Scott Shields (Cuesta) made it 4-0 with an RBI ground out.
Nicholas Myers (St. Michael’s) started and pitched six shutout for Geneva. The righty struck out five, walked three and allowed six hits for his third win against one loss on the campaign. In 24 innings of work, Myers has 20 Ks, eight walks and an ERA of 1.50.
George Martin (Columbia) pitched two-thirds of the seventh for Geneva.
Rob Winemiller (Case Western Reserve) struck out the one batter he faced to end the game.
Buddin took the loss as he gave up four earned runs on four hits, three strike outs and five walks over six and a third.
Rochester put a runner on base in each inning but could never capitalize. K.C. Simons (Covenant) led the Ridgemen with two hits. Five other Ridgemen had hits.
The game was called after seven innings, with intermittent rain showers and thunderstorms finally prevailing.
Geneva improves to 11-9 with the win and sits in a fifth place tie with the Syracuse Salt Cats. The two teams are a half-game out of second place in the NYCBL standings.
The Red Wings host an Independence Day double-header against the Wellsville Nitros (11-8). The Nitros are one of three teams tied for second. First pitch at McDonough Park is scheduled for noon.
Rochester falls to 5-15. The Ridgemen get a day off before playing a double-header in Geneva on Friday. Rochester takes on the Twins at 3 p.m. before battling the Red Wings in the evening.
