BRADFORD, PA – Dalton Scarborough hurled a complete game shutout, and Mike Fahrman (University of Florida) propelled the offense as the Olean Oilers tightened their grip on first place with a 5-0 triumph over the Niagara Power in New York Collegiate Baseball League action at the University of Pitt-Bradford.
Scarborough, who will be a college freshman in the fall, struck out six, walked one and allowed four hits for his first win of the season. The Haines City, Florida native retired the last seven batters he faced and only allowed multiple runners in one inning.
Fahrman drove in four of Olean’s runs with two hits in four trips to the plate. The sophomore catcher singled home Tim Ravel (Bloomsburg) in the first, and the Oilers had all the runs they needed.
Olean added a run in the third. Bradley Smith (Bloomsburg) worked a leadoff walk and moved to third on a Ravel double. One out later, Fahrman brought the run home with a ground out.
Fahrman singled home a pair of runs in the fifth as the Oilers extended their advantage. Smith slapped a one-out base hit to start the Oiler offense. Casey Gibson (Nova Southeastern) reached on an error. After a double steal, Fahrman plated the runs with a two-out single.
Olean pushed across another run in the seventh on back-to-back doubles by Kyle Mann (California U of Penn) and Bradley.
Hunter Lewis (Hampden-Sydney) took the loss. The right-hander allowed four runs (one earned) on five hits, two walks and three strike outs. Lewis is 3-1 on the season.
Ravel and Smith had two hits apiece along with Fahrman.
Olean improves to 15-6 with the victory. Coupled with a Wellsville loss, the Oilers stretched their lead to three in the NYCBL.
Niagara falls to 9-12. The 2012 NYCBL finalist trail the Oilers by six games in the standings. The Power sit two and a half games out of the sixth and final playoff spot.
Both teams get a day off before meeting again Friday night. First pitch at Sal Maglie Stadium is scheduled for 7 p.m.
