SYRACUSE, NY — The Syracuse Salt Cats will be sending five representatives to the 2013 New York Collegiate Baseball League All-Star game in Geneva, New York on July 9th.
1B/OF Cristian Fiorito (Concordia College) makes the NYCBL mid-summer classic in his first year in the league. He is second in the league with 17 RBIs. The upcoming junior at Concordia is also hitting .367 with two home runs in 17 games played for the Salt Cats. Cristian’s older brother, Dan Fiorito was a two-time NYCBL All-Star as a Salt Cat and is currently playing for the Tampa Yankees in the Florida State League, Advanced Single-A affiliate of the New York Yankees.
Cristian will also be participating in the NYCBL Home Run Derby.
Across the diamond, 3B Mike DeCarr (Cortland State) joins Fiorito in Geneva next week. DeCarr, hitting .349 on the year with a home run and 12 RBI. DeCarr has been on base for the Salt Cats in every game that he’s played. In addition to his offensive accolades, DeCarr also owns a .926 fielding percentage at third base and is standout Division III prospect.
The Salt Cats table setter, OF Carlos Guzman (Molloy College) leads the team with a .377 average and is sixth in the league in that category. He’s really started to heat up over the last week, driving in four of his eight runs on the year in that span. He’s second on the Salt Cats with four stolen bases and has four doubles and a triple.
RHP Zach Carlino (Mount Union) came to the Salt Cats as a first basemen and pitcher and makes the All-Star squad as a hurler. Through 15.2 innings of work this summer, Carlino hadn’t allowed a run on the mound. That streak came to a close on Friday June 28th at 20 innings. His 1.23 ERA is fifth in the league over this three starts (2-0) in 22 innings of work. Though he won’t be swinging any lumber in the All-Star game, he is hitting .293 with six RBIs for the Salt Cats.
Joining Carlino on the mound is RHP Ian Drapcho (Walsh University) The upcoming senior Cavalier is 1-0 in three appearances (three starts) for the Salt Cats and owns a 0.81 ERA, which would be fourth in the league if he qualified. In his two stars, Drapcho has thrown five innings, allowed a run and a hit in each start. On the year he’s averaging 10.6 strikeouts per nine innings pitcher. He has 13 strikeouts in his 11 innings of work.
The players are split into two teams, one on the behalf of ‘Roberto’s Kids’, a non-profit organization in the name of the late Roberto Clemente providing sports equipment for underprivileged children. The other on ‘Second Impact’ a group led by former boxer Ray Ciancaglini dedicated to concussion awareness.
Fioritio was drafted by the ‘Roberto’s Kid’s’ squad, led by Syracuse Jr. Chiefs Manager Chris Haynes. The Jr. Chiefs won the 2012 NYCBL Championship and Haynes gets the honor of managing the squad. Fiorito is the only Salt Cat on that side.
DeCarr, Guzman, Carlino and Drapcho were drafted by ‘Second Impact’ Manager Josh Rebandt of the Niagara Power, the runner up in last year’s NYCBL championship.
Salt Cats Manager Mike Martinez and pitching Coach Shaun Caveny (College at Brockport) will be on the ‘Second Impact’ staff.
