ROCHESTER, NY – One announced his arrival with authority, and the other confirmed his status as one of the best in the New York Collegiate Baseball League.
Anthony Renz (Hornell Dodgers/Mansfield University) and Tommy Begjans (Geneva Red Wings/Haverford College) turned in stellar weeks and earned the NYCBL’s Hitter and Pitcher of the Week.
Renz joined Hornell last Monday and hit .455 (15-33) during his first week in the NYCBL. The Danville, Pa. native collected five doubles, a home run and eight RBI while scoring three runs. The right-handerd batter currently has an eight-game hitting streak. After starting the season 1-6, the Dodgers have gone 6-2 with Renz in the lineup.
Bergjans took a no-hitter into the seventh inning and allowed one earned run over 14 innings for the week. The right-hander struck out 21 batters, allowed four walks and six hits going 1-0 with a no-decision. Opposing batters hit .111 against him for the week. His second win of the season (9-0 over the Niagara Power in the first game of a double-header) put the Red Wings in position to get to .500 for the season. An opportunity Geneva seized and swept a pair from the denizens of Sal Maglie Stadium.
