SHERRILL, NY – The Syracuse Junior Chiefs scored five runs through the opening two innings and did not look back from there as they topped the Sherrill Silversmiths, 9-3 in New York Collegiate Baseball League action at Noyes Park.
Nick Sinay (University of Buffalo) got things started after being hit by a pitch to start the game. A sacrifice bunt moved Sinay and he scored from second on a single from center fielder Alex Caruso (St. John’s).
Syracuse tacked on four more runs in the second frame. Kenny Hostrander (Eastern Kentucky) knocked a double to left field for an RBI. After a groundout to the pitcher, Sinay plated two more runners with a single.
Sherrill starting pitcher Tom DeBernardis (Cazenovia College) was chased in the fourth after allowing five runs on six hits.
Sherrill had their chances early in the game, but to no avail. The Silversmiths left the bases loaded in both of the first two innings without scoring a run. Manager Dennis Duffy talked about the team’s loss.
“We missed some opportunities and got ourselves in a hole that was tough to overcome, especially after being tired and worn down a little after playing extra innings yesterday,” said Duffy, referring to the doubleheader in Geneva in which the team played 20 innings of baseball.
Sherrill managed five hits through six innings off of Junior Chief starter Greg Jasek (Clarkson), yet could only score one run. That run came on Skyler Geissinger’s (Southern Illinois University of Edwardsville) solo shot over the right field fence in the sixth inning.
The Silversmiths scored two more in the eighth inning to cut the Syracuse lead to 6-3, but Hostrander hit a three-run homer out to left field. He finished the game with three hits and four RBI.
The Silversmiths have now lost two in a row after a six-game winning streak. The loss drops Sherrill back to .500 at 6-6 on the season. Syracuse (8-5) has won its last three ballgames.
The Junior Chiefs take on Oneonta on June 21 while Sherrill visits the Geneva Twins for two games in two days starting tomorrow, June 20. The Silversmiths next home game is the following day, Saturday, also against the Twins.
