WELLSVILLE, NY – Thaddeus Johnson (St. Bonaventure) made league history as the Wellsville Nitros defeated the Hornell Dodgers, 10-5 on a special night to raise cancer awareness.
Johnson homered twice in an eight-run third inning as the Nitros sent 12 batters to the plate.
Johnson’s leadoff round-tripper broke a 1-1 tie and gave the Nitros a lead they never surrendered. The Jamestown, New York native made league history with a three-run blast later in the stanza scoring Scott De Jong (Felician) and Cody Trinch (Thiel). The two home runs in one inning is thought to be the only occurrence of such in NYCBL history.
Wellsville scored seven of their third inning runs with two outs. Cameron Friess (Texas St. U) brought home David DeWolfe (Francis Marion) and Shane Barley (St. John Fisher) with a bases loaded single. Trinch scored Tyler Lau (Illinois Springfield) with a double, and De Jong singled home Friess.
Hornell put pairs of runs on the board in the fifth and seventh but could come no closer.
Dylan Dunn (Hagerstown CC) scored on a ground out by Gavin Stupienski (North Carolina Wilmington), and Spencer Scorza (Monroe CC) came home on an error in the fifth.
Stupienski doubled home Dunn in the seventh and came around to score on a Jordan Wheaton (Alfred St.)base hit.
Andrew White (William and Mary) went five innings for his first win of the season. The southpaw allowed three runs (two earned)on five hits and four walks while striking out four.
Nick Anderson (San Diego St.) held the Dodgers without a hit in the sixth.
Steve Stoklosa (Monroe CC) took the loss. The right-hander is 0-2 on the season.
Hornell grabbed a short-lived lead in the first. Dunn drove home Sean McCracken (Southern Nevada) with a single.
In the bottom of the frame, Aaron Brill (Felician) scored on a double steal.
De Jong added his third home run of the season in the fifth.
The Nitros used special pink bats and donned pink shirts to raise awareness of cancer. The bats and jerseys were sold with all proceeds going to the American Cancer Society.
Wellsville hosts a double-header with Niagara on Sunday. A 1 p.m. first pitch of game one is scheduled.
Hornell hosts the Geneva Twins on Sunday. First pitch is slated for 5 p.m. at Maple City Park.
