Clark and De Jong earn NYCBL weekly honors

ROCHESTER, NY – Dialing zeroes and making a late hall-of-famer smile. That’s what this week’s New York Collegiate Baseball League Pitcher and Player of the Week accomplished.

Ryan Clark (Syracuse Jr. Chiefs/UNC Greensboro) hurled 13 shutout innings in a pair of outings, and Scott De Jong (Wellsville Nitros/Felician) connected on a pair of three-run bombs that had to make Earl Weaver smile from the grave.

Clark struck out 8 and walked none as the Jr. Chiefs defeated Sherrill, 7-0 on Opening Day. The sophomore from Johnson City, New York surrendered just three hits over six innings. The right-hander followed that with seven shutout innings on Sunday as the Jr. Chiefs fell to their cross-town rival Syracuse Salts Cats, 1-0 on a walkoff ground out RBI.  Clark fanned 16 for the week while offering exactly zero free passes.

De Jong let his teammate, Shane Barley, nab the daily honors, but it was his collective effort which took Player-of-the-Week. In a rain-shortened week, the 6-4 235 pound De Jong connected for home runs in both of Wellsville’s victories. He added an RBI on a sacrifice fly and leads the league with seven runs batted in. He batted .500 for the week.
