OLEAN, NY — Olean’s Oilers scored three runs in the first two innings and never trailed in a 5-4 victory over the Hornell Dodgers in New York Collegiate Baseball League action at Olean High School, Saturday evening.
Joe Chittester (Brewton Parker) doubled home Tim Ravel (Bloomsburg) in the first.
Olean added two in the second. Julien Plana (Nova Southeastern) plated Dylan Newton (Lyndon State) with a base hit. Ravel brought home Bradley Smith on a fielder’s choice.
Ravel scored in the fifth on an RBI base hit by Mike Fahrman (Florida). Dalton Scarborough delivered a two-out double scoring Lee Grosscup (Mt. Union).
After two consecutive rainouts, Hornell finally got on the field and had their rally fall just short. The Dodgers trailed 5-1 but cut it to 5-4 in the eighth but could not get any closer.
Hornell got on the scoreboard for the first time this season in thefifth when Jake Kenney (Genesee CC) singled home Gavin Stupienski (UNC Wilmington) to cut the lead to 3-1.
The game remained 5-1 until the 8th when Dylan Dunn (Hagerstown CC) connected on a two-out three-run homer to cut the lead to 5-4.
The Dodgers could not muster up any more offense as Derek Vail recorded the final three outs for the save in the ninth.
Max Beermann (Villanova) allowed one earned run over five innings for the win.
Kenney and Dunn both finished 2-4 on the day as the Dodgers collected six hits. The Dodger bullpen of Tyler Wilson (U of Buffalo) and Connell Anderson (Wofford) held Oiler hitters to just one hit in the final 3.1 innings to keep the Blue & White in the game. Wilson went 2.1 innings of one hit relief while Anderson pitched a perfect eighth inning.
After falling in their first two games, the Oilers got off the schneid. Olean lost by a combined score of 20-3.
The Dodgers and the Oilers will battle again on Sunday when the two teams play a 3 p.m. doubleheader at Maple City Park.
