The Canisius College men’s basketball team will play its final game of the 2012 calendar year Sunday afternoon when the Golden Griffins travel to Detroit to play the Titans in the final game of the Chevrolet Gotham Classic. Tipoff is set for 3 p.m., and the game can be heard live on AM-1400 (in Buffalo) and through GoGriffs.com. The video stream is also avaialble through the Horizon League Network.
Canisius enters the game with an 9-3 overall record after the Blue and Gold beat Alcorn State at home 87-74 on Thursday night. The nine wins for Canisius are the most for the program prior to Jan. 1, and it is also four more victories than the entire 2011-12 season. Junior Billy Baron leads the way with his 17.6 points per game, which ranks fourth in the MAAC, and his 5.3 assists per game ranks second in the conference. Senior guard Isaac Sosa scored 21 points in the win over Alcorn State and he starts Sunday’s game with 24 3-pointers in the team’s last six games.
Detroit, the defending Horizon League champions, come into Sunday’s contest with a 7-5 overall record. The Titans have not played since Dec. 19, as the team’s game at Temple, scheduled for Dec. 28, was postponed due to weather and travel issues. Junior guard Ray McCallum, the son of Detroit head coach Ray McCallum, leads the Horizon League in scoring with his 18.5 points per game. The Titans are 6-0 at home this year and the team holds a 16-14 all-time lead in the series against Canisius, which dates back to the 1911-12 season.
