POUGHKEEPSIE, N.Y. – A week away from competition due to final exams was little more than an afterthought after the Marist men’s basketball scored a season-high in points in its 94-69 home triumph over Maine in a non-conference game on Sunday at McCann Arena.
Senior Devin Price (Inglewood, Calif.) led all scorers with a season-high 28 points. Sophomore Chavaughn Lewis(Queens, N.Y.) scored a career-high 27 points, while fifth-year senior Dorvell Carter (Bronx, N.Y.) came off the bench to score a season-high 13 points in 15 minutes of action.
The fans at McCann Arena got the feeling early on that they could be in for an offensive game as the contest was already 17-12 in Marist’s favor by the first media timeout at 13:10.
With the game 17-16 at the 11:47 mark, the Red Foxes would quickly extend their lead to nine with a 9-1 run over the next 2:14. The trio of Lewis, Price and Adam Kemp (Sherrill, N.Y.) each netted three points during this run.
Maine chipped away at the lead slightly to bring the margin to within six at 37-31 with less than three minutes remaining in the first half.
The final 2:47 of the period would be all Marist, as the team closed with an 11-0 run. After a Devin Price three-pointer at 2:37, the final eight points were all netted by Carter via a trey, a jumper and an “and one” conversion.
The teams went into the locker room with the score 48-31 at the break. As a team, Marist was outshooting Maine 56.3 (18-32) to 38.7 (12-31) from the field and 50.0 (5-10) to 14.3 (1-7) from long range. Price was the high-scorer with 15 points on 5-9 shooting from the field. Sophomore Manny Thomas (Brooklyn, N.Y.), in his second start of the season, was credited with five assists in the first period.
The Black Bears came out in the second half on a mission and went on a 12-2 run to start the period to bring the game within seven at 50-43 with just 3:34 off of the clock. After some trading of baskets, Maine would cut further into the deficit by the 13:13 mark with the score 55-50.
Starting with a pair of made free throws by Lewis, the Red Foxes would outscore the Black Bears 39-19 over the final 13 minutes. An 11-2 run from 7:20 to 5:04 broke open the game as Marist increased its lead from 12 at 70-58 to 21 at 81-60. Seven of the 11 points in this span were registered at the foul line.
Marist earned its largest lead of the day in the waning seconds of the game when sophomore Tourron Whitfield (Valley Stream, N.Y.) found Patrick Ramsey (Easthampton, Mass.) on the wing for the first three-pointer of his Red Fox career. This bucket would finalize the scoring at 94-69.
94 points is the third-highest offensive output by a Red Foxes team over the past 10 seasons; only a 95-point showing versus Rider on Dec. 4, 2011 and a 97-point performance at La Salle on Nov. 30, 2002 rank higher.
As a team, Marist shot .548 (34-62) for the game, and was over 50 percent in both halves. The Red Foxes also hit nine three-pointers at a 45.0 percent clip (9-20), and went 17-23 from the foul line (73.9). Defensively, they forced 19 turnovers, and held Maine to 38.5 (25-65) percent from the field and 8.3 percent (1-12) shooting from three-point range.
Individually, Price led the team’s scoring effort with 28 points, while Kemp hauled in seven rebounds along with three blocks. Thomas was the team’s leading facilitator with a career-best six assists in 20 minutes of play.
Marist improved to 4-6 overall; Maine fell to 3-8. The Red Foxes will be back in action on Wednesday, when they travel to Bucknell for a 7 p.m. tip-off.
Note: With 28 points, Price moved into Marist’s top 20 all-time in scoring at 1,062 career points. He began the day in 23rd place, and surpassed Bill Gowen, Fred Weiss and Nick Eppehimer to move to 20th place.
