Spiders extend winning streak in defeat over UNC Greensboro, 104-69

GREENSBORO, N.C. — Richmond cruised to an early lead and never looked back as it defeated UNC Greensboro, 104-69, Saturday at Fleming Gym.  Richmond won its fourth-straight as it improved to 7-4 overall.

Richmond scored 100 points for the first time since beating Howard 101-57 on Dec. 15, 2004. Richmond had five players in double-figures, led by Kristina King’s 20 points. Becca Wann added 19 and a career-best nine assists, Amber Nichols with a career-high 14, Rachael Bilney with 13 and Ryann Dannelly with 10 points and a personal-best five blocks.

The Spiders jumped out to an early 10-2 advantage in the game’s first three minutes. Richmond went a staggering 21-35 (60%) from the field in the first half, led by sixth man Becca Wann’s 11 points. Wann was perfect in the first frame, going 5-of-5 from the field with four assists.

Wann ended the game a pristine 9-of-9 from the field. Nine players notched points in the first half. The Spiders had 14 assists on the 21 field goals and a season-high nine blocks.

The Spiders started the second half on an 11-0 run, spearheaded by Kristina King’s nine points. Richmond had season-highs in virtually every category: field goals (42) attempts (72) assists (32) and blocks (12).

Richmond will resume action in 11 days after exam week. The Spiders host the Eagles of Florida Gulf Coast at 7 p.m. Wednesday, Dec. 19.

NOTES: The 104 points scored was a Fleming Gym record…The margin of victory was Richmond’s largest this season…Richmond improved to 3-0 all-time against UNCG…The 42 first-half points scored by the Spiders was a season-high…Richmond’s four-game win streak is its longest since Feb. of last season…Richmond improved to 2-2 in road games…The Spiders have won six of their last seven games…Ten Spiders notched points in the scoring column…Richmond’s 32 assists were four shy of tying the program-record…The Spiders had five players in double-figures for the first time since Jan. 14, 2010 against UMass…Wann’s nine assists were the most by a Spider since Sam Bilney had nine in 2009.
