BOSTON, Mass. – Junior Tyreek Duren hit a fade-away jumper with 1.2 seconds remaining to break a tie game and give visiting La Salle a 66-64 win at Northeastern on Saturday night at Matthews Arena. Duren scored all 12 of his points in the second half and provided late-game heroics for the second time in as many weeks.
Senior Ramon Galloway scored 24 points, 19 of which came in the first half, and shot 9-for-18 from the field. Sophomore Jerrell Wright had 13 points on 6-for-7 shooting.
Wright’s lay-up with 2:54 to play gave the Explorers (6-1) a four-point lead at 64-60. Two fouls shots by Northeastern’s Zach Stahl followed and a jumper by Quincy Ford tied the score at 1:19.
Duren missed a jumper with 56 seconds left but the Huskies (4-5) turned the ball over in its next possession. La Salle called timeout with 11 seconds and Duren took the ball at the top of the key, drove into the lane and faded away from about 15 feet on the wing and gave the Explorers the road victory.
Galloway scored more than half of La Salle’s points in the first half as the visitors rallied from a seven-point deficit midway through the half to lead by two at the break, 36-34.
The Huskies took their final lead of the game with 14:07 remaining before a three from Galloway put the Explorers up 47-46 a minute later. LU led the rest of the way except for the tie game with 1:19 to play on Ford’s jumper.
Reggie Spencer had 16 points to lead NU, while Stahl had 12 off the bench.
The Explorers improved to 6-0 this season while committing less turnovers and the 6-1 start is the best since the 2005-06 team began 7-0.
La Salle is back in action on Saturday when it visits Bucknell at 7 PM.
