WASHINGTON – The George Washington women’s basketball team was tied with district rival Georgetown at halftime, but the visiting Hoyas opened the second half with a 19-4 run and the Colonials suffered a 70-54 loss on Saturday evening at the Charles E. Smith Center.
Graduate student Tara Booker matched her season high with 20 points on 7-of-12 shooting, including 6-of-10 from beyond the arc. Booker’s six three-pointers were the most by a Colonials player this season and equaled her career best.
Senior Megan Nipe was the only other Colonials player in double figures with 11 points. Senior Danni Jacksonmatched her career high with eight assists to go with seven points and three steals, and sophomore Chakecia Milleralso dished out a career best six helpers while adding six points.
The score was tied, 8-8, after four minutes of play, but a layup by Miller and a three-pointer by Booker ignited a 16-6 GW run that gave the hosts a 24-14 lead with 6:27 left in the half.
Georgetown (6-2) quickly answered as Samisha Powell’s jump shot on the Hoyas’ next possession sparked a 12-2 run that tied the game at 26-26 with 2:52 to go. A triple by Booker with 43 seconds left gave GW its final lead of the night, 33-31, but Georgetown’s Andrea White hit a layup with 10 seconds remaining to send the teams into the locker rooms tied at 33-33.
After shooting nearly 43 percent in the first half, GW (4-3) struggled in the second stanza, making just 29 percent of its shots. Georgetown improved from 46 percent in the first period to 54 percent in the second to finish at 50 percent for the game, a season high for a GW opponent.
The Hoyas opened the second half with a 19-4 run to take control of the game at 52-37. The Colonials tried to chip away with five straight points to pull within 10 with 12:03 to go, but that was as close they would get. Georgetown responded with 10 straight points to go up 62-42 at the 8:21 mark.
After a Brittany Horne layup gave the Hoyas a game-high 21-point lead, 66-45, with 6:05 remaining, GW scored nine of the game’s final 13 points, but it was not enough to overcome the deficit.
Sugar Rodgers led four Hoyas in double figures with 22 points, and she added eight rebounds, six steals and four assists, while White finished with 15 points, four assists and four steals.
Georgetown held a 30-27 rebounding edge, but dominated in the paint, outscoring GW, 32-6.
The Colonials have a week off before making the short trip to cross-town rival American on Saturday, Dec. 8.
