TOLEDO, OHIO – The St. Bonaventure women’s basketball team (4-4) used a 56-36 victory over Southern (0-6) to snap their four-game losing streak and advance to the championship game of the Toledo Glass City Tournament.
The Bonnies exploded out to a 9-0 lead by the first media timeout. Alaina Walker, CeCe Dixon andAshley Zahn each scored during that early run.
Southern responded with a 7-0 run of their own before Dixon broke it up with a three ball from the wing. Both teams went scoreless over the next three minutes. Southern scored to cut the lead to three but that was as close as they would come for the remainder of the contest.
By halftime the Bonnies had built a 26-14 advantage. Ashley Zahn led the way for the Brown and White with seven first half points on 3-6 shooting, 1-4 from three-point range. Alaina Walker and CeCe Dixon each added six points of their own. The Bonnies shot 41.7 percent in the first while holding the Jaguars to an opponent season low 22.2 percent shooting.
At the start of the second half, the Bonnies came out firing once again. Jumping out on a 10-0 run, SBU didn’t allow Southern to score until the 15:41 mark. The Brown and White built a twenty-point lead by the 12:49 mark on a jumper by Ashley Zahn.
SBU put this one on cruise control from that point on and by the 4:19 mark, head coach Jim Crowley had five freshmen on the floor.
When it was all said and done the Bonnies had cruised to a 56-36 victory, holding Southern to the second-lowest opponent field goal percentage of the season (26.8). The Bonnies shot 38.5 percent in the victory.
Walker led the Bonnies with a game-high 15 points and a game-high eight rebounds. Zahn contributed 11 points, making Saturday her fourth double-figure scoring game already this season. The Canandaigua native also added a career best six rebounds. CeCe Dixon scored nine points and Doris Ortega added four with seven rebounds.
Freshmen Katie Healy, Emily Michael and Nyla Rueter scored a combined 17 points and grabbed 11 rebounds as a group.
NEXT UP: The Bonnies will face off with the winner of Toledo and SIU-Edwardsville in the championship game of the Toledo Glass City Tournament Sunday (Dec. 2) at 2:30 p.m.
