FORT MYERS, Fla. – Jordan Latham scored a career-high 17 points to lead all scorers, but Loyola University Maryland had its six-game winning streak snapped on Saturday night as Florida Gulf Coast University beat the visiting Greyhounds, 65-50, at Alico Arena.
Latham made 7-of-10 shots form the field and raced past his previous high of nine in less than 10-minutes, 30-seconds of action, and he finished with 14 in the first half.
The rest of the team, however, made just 13-of-50 shots (26-percent), and Loyola committed 17 turnovers that led to 19 points for Florida Gulf Coast.
“I did not think we had good energy tonight,” Head Coach Jimmy Patsos said. “Jordan Latham had a very good game, one that he can really build on.”
Loyola (7-2 overall) never led in the game, but after trailing by eight less than eight minutes in, the Greyhounds got within three, 21-18, on a Latham layup at 9:37.
The Eagles (5-3) stretched their advantage back to nine, 32-23, on an Eric McKnight dunk 2:22 before the break. It was an eight-point lead at halftime for Florida Gulf Coast, but Bernard Thompson scored 38 seconds in to push the lead to double digits.
Dylon Cormier scored on a layup for Loyola at 18:15, but that was the last time Loyola with trail by less than 10. The Eagles scored the next eight points and went up 44-28 on two Sherwood Brown free throws at 16:02.
Brown led Florida Gulf Coast with 14 points, while Thompson had 13, and Brett Comer scored 10.
Cormier scored 12 points and had nine rebounds, tying his career-high. Robert Olson added 10 for the Greyhounds.
Loyola opens Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference action on Wednesday, December 5, when it hosts Niagara University at 7:30 p.m.
