UNIVERSITY OF RICHMOND, Va. — Junior Genevieve Okoro suffered a season-ending knee injury that will sideline her the rest of the 2012-13 season.
I am heartbroken for Gen,” said head coach Michael Shafer. “She was on her way to a breakout year and had it cut short is just sad. I know she will still play an important role on our team, as she has always been a voice for us, but we certainly lost a game-changer. I feel for our team as well, but we can only deal with what we can control and this is out of our hands. We cannot dwell on this, the season continues and we need to keep our focus on getting better each day.”
Okoro suffered a anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) tear in the closing minutes of the Wichita State game.
The Gibbsboro, N.J. native was second on the team with 10.3 points per game, and pulled down a team-high 11.0 rebounds per game. Okoro’s rebound total ranked second in the A-10 and 25th in the country. Okoro had registered a double-double in three games this season and grabbeddouble-figure rebounds in all but two games.
Okoro pulled down a career-high 17 boards in the win over Minnesota, marking the most rebounds by a Spider since Kate Flavin corralled 22 in a win over GW in 2002.
Okoro was an All-Conference third team selection last season and was tabbed to the 2012 Preseason All-Conference second team.
Richmond hosts North Carolina A&T tomorrow at 4 p.m. as part of a doubleheader with the men’s team.
