BLACKSBURG, Va. – The George Washington women’s basketball team struggled to find its offense in a 50-31 loss to Virginia Tech on Sunday afternoon at the Hokies’ Cassell Coliseum.
GW (3-2) shot just 24.4 percent (11-for-45) from the floor and 27.3 percent (6-for-22) from the foul line as no Colonials’ player managed to reach double figures. Sophomore Chakecia Miller led GW with seven points, while senior Megan Nipe tallied six points and a team-high five rebounds.
Both teams struggled from the floor early, combining to make just six of the first 26 field goal attempts. GW led, 8-6, on a jumper by Miller at the 11:35 mark, but the Colonials managed just two field goals the rest of the first half – both three-pointers – as Virginia Tech (2-2) finished the period on a 20-7 run to take a 26-15 lead at the break.
A layup by Nipe early in the second half pulled the Colonials within 10 points, 28-18, but they would get no closer. After the Hokies scored six straight, freshman Anjaleace White made a lay-in and senior Danni Jackson drained a three-pointer to bring GW back within 11 points, 34-23, with 13:07 to play, but Virginia Tech held the Colonials without a field goal for more than nine minutes to put the game away.
A layup by Larryqua Hall with 23 seconds left gave the Hokies their largest lead of the game, 50-27, but Miller hit two free throws and a layup to account for the 50-31 final margin.
Monet Tellier led Virginia Tech with 19 points and nine rebounds, while Taijah Campbell recorded eight points and a game-high 11 rebounds. The Hokies outrebounded the Colonials, 44-27.
The Colonials return to action on Wednesday, when they conclude a three-game road swing at Morgan State.
