Richmond comes up short against Wisconsin-Green Bay, 79-48

CANCUN, Mexico– Richmond had its two-game win streak snapped against Wisconsin-Green Bay, 79-48, Saturday at the Cancun Challenge.

Richmond fell to 3-4, while Wisconsin-Green Bay (who is receiving votes in the Top-25 poll) improved to 4-1. The Spiders walked away from theCancun Challenge with a 2-1 mark. No team went undefeated.

Green Bay started hot early, pushing its lead to 13-5 within the first seven minutes of the game. Richmond got to within six with just under 10 to play in the half, but another scoring spree by the Phoenix extended their lead to 33-18 at the break.

The Spiders were no stranger to a half-time deficit as they trailed in each game played at the Cancun Challenge. Kristina King led Richmond with seven points at the break, while freshman Lauren Tolson chipped in with five points.

The deficit proved to be too much to overcome as the Phoenix shot 17-for-28 (61%) for the second-half. Almost half (14) of Green Bay’s field goals (29) were by way of a three-pointer. The Phoenix went 14-for-24 from long-range. Seven of the Phoenix’s 14 second-half field goals were from behind the arc.

Richmond was led by Kristina King’s 13 points. Tolson showed poise, playing a career-high 29 minutes and tying a personal-best with ninepoints. Becca Wann had a team-high four assists and seven rebounds.

The Spiders resume action Wednesday, Nov. 28 at the Robins Center at 4 p.m. against North Carolina A&T as part of a doubleheader with the men’s team.

NOTES: Today’s game was the first-ever meeting between Green Bay and the Spiders…Richmond won two neutral site games for the first time since the Lehigh Christmas Classic last December.
