PITTSBURGH – Freshmen Quevyn Winters and Derrick Colter scored 18 points each as Duquesne concluded the Progressive Legends Classic with an 84-74 win over Youngstown State at the Palumbo Center.
Seven-one center Martins Abele provided a big boost off the bench with 9 points and a game-high 10 rebounds in 14 minutes and Kadeem Pantophlet added 13 points – including a career high-tying four 3-pointers – for DU.
Duquesne (2-3) went 2-1 in the three-games-in-three-days event. Youngstown State, which entered the Pittsburgh Sub Regional 3-0, left at 3-3.
Winters, who scored 37 points in the three games, was named to the All-Tournament team. Kendrick Perry, who led YSU with 15, was also named to the All-Tournament team.
Duquesne, which maintained at least a seven-point lead from the 10:29 mark of the first half, saw the Penguins cut it to five on a Shawn Amiker 3-pointer with two minutes left.
Jerry Jones, who had 6 points and a career-high 9 rebounds, was fouled on a drive as his shot was goaltended. Jones converted the three-point play to push the lead back to eight.
Amiker added a tip-in to make it a six-point game before Colter, Jerry Jones and Jeremiah Jones went 5-of-6 from the foul line in the final minute to preserve the win.
“I thought they showed a lot of character and a lot of unselfishness,” said Duquesne coach Jim Ferry of the Dukes. “The biggest thing for us moving forward is we have to get consistent. If we give this effort, this focus and this determination every night and we get beat, we can live with that.”
Duquesne used a 17-2 run to turn a 5-0 deficit into a 17-7 lead on a Pantophlet 3-pointer. The Penguins briefly cut it to five before Winters hit a jumper, layup and 3-pointer in 69 seconds to give Duquesne a 27-15 lead. DU maintained at least an eight-point margin for the remainder of the half which ended with the Dukes up 42-33.
Winters (9), Colter (9) and Jeremiah Jones (4) combined for 22 of DU’s 42 first-half points. Pantophlet scored 10 in 12 first half minutes.
YSU briefly cut it to seven in the opening minute of the second half before Abele scored five in a row to open a 50-35 lead.
The Penguins stayed within striking distance behind Perry and Amiker, who scored all 10 of his points in the second half.
Duquesne, which shot 45 percent, outrebounded YSU 53-29. It was the largest margin posted by a DU team in a Division I game since a 48-20 margin in a 129-59 season-opening win over Howard on Nov. 9, 2007.
The Dukes return to action on Wednesday, Nov. 28 at Appalachian State.
