CHARLESTON, S.C. — A perfect offensive performance from freshman Dyshawn Pierre helped the Dayton Flyers to an 87-71 victory over the Boston College Eagles in the second round of the Charleston Classic.
Pierre shot 8-of-8 from the field and hit all five shots from three-point range to finish with 23 points. He also converted both free throw attempts and added three assists.
He is the first Flyer freshman to score more than 20 points in a game since Chris Wright poured in 26 against the Toledo Rockets on Nov. 21, 2007.
Dayton improved to 2-1 overall and will play either Auburn or the College of Charleston in the finale of the Charleston Classic on Sunday at 2:30 p.m. ET.
Pierre led five Flyers in double figures. Devin Oliver and Jalen Robinson each scored season-highs with 17 and 15 points respectively. Kevin Dillard added 14 points, while Vee Sanford chipped in with 10 points and six assists.
The Flyers used a 17-2 run at the end of the first half to break the game open and take a 37-26 lead at the break. UD shot 62 percent from the floor, the highest field goal percentage in a game under coach Archie Miller.s tenure.
UD also kept two other positive trends intact. The Flyers shot 57 percent from three-point range, making them 9-0 under Miller.s tenure when they shoot better than 40 percent from beyond the arc.
Also, at the free throw line the Flyers hit on 11-of-14 shots, making it the 18th time in the last 19 games shooting 70 percent or better at the charity stripe.
Boston College, led by 16 points from Joe Rahon, dropped to 1-2 overall.
