HAMILTON, N.Y. – The Marist men’s basketball team fell on the road to a game Colgate squad, who came in to Wednesday’s matchup with two consecutive solid showings versus BCS squads, Illinois and Marquette. After 40 minutes of basketball, the host Raiders (1-2) were 74-60 victors over the Red Foxes (0-2). Senior Devin Price (Inglewood, Calif.) was Marist’s leading scorer with 17 points, while junior Adam Kemp (Sherrill, N.Y.) registered his second straight double-double with 15 points and 10 rebounds in his home-coming game.
The game began with back-and-forth flow as each team found early success on the offensive ends. At the 14:31 mark the score was 10-9 in favor of Colgate. Kemp led the early charge for Marist as he connected for two baskets and a free throw for five points.
With Colgate’s leading scorer Murphy Burnatowski out of the game with two quick fouls within the first four minutes, the Red Foxes’ sailing was set to be seemingly easier if not for the Raiders’ backup forward Brandon James. The Poughkeepsie native subbed in at the 13:45 mark in the first and would lead the Colgate charge with 17 points in 12 total minutes of action in the first period.
From 13:45 to 6:31, the Red Foxes would go cold from the field and allow Colgate to stretch its one point lead to 18 on the strength of a 19-2 run.
The Red Foxes were able to cut the lead to 13 before the break after sophomore T.J. Curry (Brooklyn, N.Y.) converted a four-point play on a made three and a free throw with 0.8 seconds left on the clock.
At the half, the Raiders were outshooting the Red Foxes 55.2 (16-29) to 38.1 (8-21) from the field and 71.4 (5-7) to 16.7 (1-6) from distance. Marist had a 66.7 (10-15) to 60.0 (3-5) advantage from the foul line. Price was the team’s leading scorer with seven points.
In the second half, the Red Foxes’ offensive success picked up, but Colgate converted enough to continue to hold a double-digit lead until consecutive plays, a three-point play by Price and a steal and a basket by sophomore Isaiah Morton (Vineland, N.J.), cut the score to 56-47 at 9:34.
A quick 7-0 response by the hosts would prove to be the undoing for Marist as the Red Foxes would never get within 12 over the remainder of the game.
For the contest, Marist was outshot 46.6 (27-58) to 41.3 (19-46) and 45.5 (5-11) to 21.4 (3-14) from three-point range.
Price (17) and Kemp (15) were the only two Red Foxes in double-figures. Kemp led the Red Foxes in rebounds with 10, as well as in blocks with two.
The Red Foxes will continue its early season non-conference slate on Saturday, Nov. 17 when they face off with the Columbia Lions in New York, N.Y. Tip-off is slated for 7 p.m.
