CINCINNATI – Xavier women’s basketball head coach Amy Waugh has announced the signing of six high school seniors to National Letters of Intent to play college ball as Musketeers as part of XU’s 2013 recruiting class.
Maddison Blackwell (Gahanna, Ohio – Lincoln), Kayla Davis (Brampton, Ontario – St. Marguerite d’Youville), Erica Dawson (Marietta, Ohio – Marietta), Leah Schaefer (Alexandria, Ky. – Highlands), Kayla Styles (Louisville, Ky. – Manual) and Martha Thompson (Solon, Ohio – Solon) are now the newest members of the Xavier family.
“We are very pleased to announce our 2013 signing class,” commented Waugh. “Our staff has worked hard to identify and bring players to Xavier who are talented, of high character and who will make our University proud both on and off the court. Each of these six young ladies bring a unique set of talents and we couldn’t be more excited to welcome each of them to the Xavier family.”
Maddison Blackwell, a 6-1 forward at Lincoln High School in Gahanna, Ohio, was named a four-star recruit by ESPN Hoopgurlz and ranked 20th in the country at her position. She averaged 10.5 ppg. and 7.8 rpg. and helped lead her team to the OHSAA State Tournament Regionals with 19 points and nine rebounds in the district finals her junior year.
Kayla Davis, a 5-6 point guard at St. Marguerite d’Youville in Brampton, Ontario, was ranked 38th at her position and named a three-star recruit by ESPN Hoopgurlz. She earned a spot on Canada’s Cadet Women’s National Team which won bronze at the World Championships last summer.
Erica Dawson, a 5-10 guard at Marietta High School in Marietta, Ohio, is the reigning OHSAA Division II Player of the Year and was ranked 47th in the country at her position by the Collegiate Girls Basketball Report. She holds the OHSAA state records for most points in a game (52), most 3-point field goals in a game (10), most 3-point field goals in a season (83) and she broke the OHSAA single-season scoring record with 714 points. Dawson averaged 29.7 ppg., 8.0 rpg., 7.0 spg. and 3.0 apg. during her junior season.
Leah Schaefer, a 6-2 forward at Highlands High School in Alexandria, Ky., was the 2011-12 Division II Kentucky Player of the Year and was selected to participate on the 2012 Kentucky All-Star Team. She was ranked 51st in the country at her position by the Collegiate Girls Basketball Report and averaged 14.9 ppg., 8.6 rpg. and shot 81.6 percent from the free throw line this past season as a junior at Highlands.
Kayla Styles, a 6-2 forward at Manual High School in Louisville, Ky., was named a four-star recruit by ESPN Hoopgurlz and ranked 19th in the nation at her position. She helped lead her team to the Kentucky State Championship in 2012, scoring nine points and grabbing nine rebounds. Styles averaged 6.3 ppg. and 6.2 rpg. as a junior at Manual.
Martha Thompson, a 5-9 guard at Solon High School in Solon, Ohio, was ranked 38th nationally at her position and was rated a three-star recruit by ESPN Hoopgurlz. She averaged 16.1 ppg., 5.3 rpg., 4.4 apg. and 3.8 spg. last season for Solon.
