SEATTLE – Loyola University Maryland scored the first points of the second half and tied the game at 33-33, but minutes later, the University of Washington turned a three-point lead into a double-digit advantage and pulled away for an 85-63 victory on Sunday evening at Alaska Airlines Arena.
Dylon Cormier scored 19 points to lead the Greyhounds, but four Huskies (1-0 overall) scored 10 or more, led by C.J. Wilcox’s 22 points.
Loyola (1-1) led at points during the first half, the final time coming on a Cormier free throw with just over six minutes to play. Washington took a two-point lead after that, but Erik Etherly tied the game for at 23-23 with a layup.
The Huskies pulled out by six with 72 ticks left on the first-half clock, but a Cormier jumper and two Etherly free throws in the final minute made it a 33-31 game at the break.
Jarred Jones grabbed an offensive rebound on the second half’s first possession and laid it in to create the game’s sixth tie, but Abdul Gaddy made a 3-pointer for Washington more than a minute later to put the Huskies in front for good.
Washington stretched it to nine on a Wilcox three – he was 4-of-5 from behind the arc – and the Huskies pushed it to 10 on two Andrew Andrews free throws at 13:38.
The Huskies shot 54-percent for the game, but they were buoyed by shooting 62.5-percent after halftime. They made 7-of-11 threes in the second frame, led by three form Wilcox.
Gaddy finished with 17 points, and Scott Suggs had 15. Aziz N’Diaye scored 10 and had a game-high 16 rebounds, although the Huskies had a modest 38-34 advantage on the boards.
Etherly scored 15 for the Greyhounds and had a team-best eight rebounds, and Robert Olson chipped in 12. Jones scored nine points, making 4-of-7 from the field and he had six boards.
The Greyhounds return to Reitz Arena on Wednesday night to face UMBC at 9 o’clock in a game that will be televised on MASN, the Mid-Atlantic Sports Network.
