The American University men’s basketball team registered a 71-46 victory over Mary Washington in an exhibition on Wednesday night as five players scored in double-digits and Tony Wroblicky picked up his first double-double of the year.
Stephen Lumpkins led all scorers with 12 points while Wroblicky picked up 18 boards with 11 points. Jesse Reed also added 11 in his first outing in an Eagles uniform, hitting 3-of-3 shots from beyond the arc. Daniel Munoz posted 10 points on 4-of-6 shooting with seven assists and two steals. John Schoof notched 10 points, going 2-of-3 from three-point range with four helpers.
“Getting in a dress rehearsal like this was really good for us,” said Head Coach Jeff Jones. “The speed of the game you’ll always want to try to duplicate in practice, but there’s something a little bit different when you step out there and I thought at times we rushed.”
American took an early nine-point lead on Reed’s first trey of the game before Mary Washington answered with one of their own at the 13:20 mark in the first half, 16-10. Mary Washington cut it to three with a pull-up jumper from Taylor Jensen. The Eagles opened up an 11-1 run with a dunk from Lumpkins, taking a 31-18 lead with 5:10 to play. Five consecutive points from Reed gave American the 38-20 advantage and Marko Vasic laid it in to close out the half as the Eagles went into the break up 40-22.
American continued to roll after the intermission, going up 58-27 on a three-point play by Munoz. Mike Bersch gave the Eagles their largest lead of the game, 61-29, on a three-pointer with 11:46 remaining. Mary Washington posted back-to-back points but American maintained the 30-point gap, taking a 70-40 lead on a Austin Carroll three-pointer at the 5:30 mark. Mary Washington closed out the game with five straight points as American posted the 71-46 victory to open the year.
Jamie Richardson registered a team-best nine points for the Eagles while Lamont Fields and Taylor Johnson each tallied seven apiece, with Fields adding a team-high five rebounds.
American shot 50.0 from the field and 44.4 percent from three-point range, holding Mary Washington to 31.3 percent shooting from the floor as they went 3-for-15 from beyond the arc.
The Eagles head to Minnesota to open the year, with tipoff set for 8 p.m. The game will be broadcast locally on Federal News Radio 1050 AM.
