Counting down the days to tipoff previewing the incoming freshmen of the Atlantic 10. The next installment features the Dayton Flyers.
In his first year at the helm, Archie Miller guided the Dayton Flyers to a 20-13 overall mark and 9-7 in the A10. The Flyers earned a home game for the first round of the NIT, but had to play the contest on the road to make room for the First Four of the NCAA Tournament (not to mention President Barack Obama). UD fell to Iowa 84-75. Starters Chris Johnson and Paul Williams graduated along with Luke Fabrizius and Josh Parker. Miller and his staff welcome four freshmen to campus: Khari Price, Dyshawn Pierre, Jalen Robinson and Devon Scott.
Khari Price 5′ 11″ 170lbs. G Slidell, La./Salmen
Khari Price became the second player on the team to join the Flyer family from the state of Louisiana. When Price and teammate Matt Derenbecker take the court this upcoming season, they will be the first players from Louisiana to play for the Flyers.
Price is a 5-foot-11, 170-pound guard from Salmen High School in Sidell, La. Price averaged 18.2 points, 5.6 assists and 2.3 steals to lead Salmen to a 27-6 record his senior season. The Spartans advanced to the state quarterfinals, where they lost by one point to Neville. Salmen won the regional round of the state tournament behind a 28-point scoring effort by Price. The Second Team Class 4A All-Louisiana selection shot 42% from the field and 74% from the line as a senior. He was rated among the top 10 players in the state, regardless of classification, in 2011-12.
Salmen also won two in-season basketball tournaments – the Skipper Classic in Mandeville, La. and the Hancock High School Tournament in Kiln, Miss. – and Price was named the MVP in both.
Price had a combined 113-19 record during his four-year varsity career. In 2010-11, the Spartans finished 32-4 and lost in overtime in the state semifinals. Price was a three-year starter and the sixth man on the 2009 Louisiana 4A State champions. As a junior, he averaged 14.9 points a game.
Salmen is the same high school that Duke star Chris Duhon attended. Duhon has played the last eight seasons in the NBA with the Bulls, Knicks and Magic. Slidell, La. is located on the eastern edge of Lake Pontchartrain across the lake from New Orleans.
With only two true point guards on the roster, Price should see time right away backing-up All-Atlantic 10 conference point guard Kevin Dillard.
Dyshawn Pierre 6′ 6″210lbs. F Whitby, ONT/ Anderson CVI
Dyshawn Pierre is an athletic 6-foot-6 210-pound wing forward who has played on back-to-back high school provincial championship teams and has represented Canada at the U19 and U17 World Championships.
This past March he led Anderson Collegiate Vocational Institute to its second straight Ontario Federation of School Athletic Associations Class AAA championship. Pierre averaged 17.3 points a game in the tournament, coming through with triple-doubles to start and end the tournament. He had 29 points, 14 rebounds and 10 assists in the first round, and a 15-point, 18-rebound, 11-assist performance in the finals. Pierre was named the championship MVP.
Pierre was also Team Canada’s leading scorer at last summer’s U19 World Championships in Latvia. At age 17 during the event, he was one of the youngest players in the tournament. His 17.7 points per game led Canada and was the 10th-highest average in the competition. He also averaged 8.1 rebounds and shot 63.9% from the field. In 2010, Pierre averaged 10.6 points and 8.2 rebounds at the U17 World Championships.
Pierre is leaving Anderson Collegiate Vocational Institute in Whitby, Ontario as the school’s all-time leading scorer (3,566 points) and rebounder (1,793).
ESPN ranks Pierre as the No. 3 recruit from Canada and the No. 35 ranked small forward in the country.
What they’re saying about Dyshawn Pierre – Allen Rubin/Hoop Scoop: “He’s a combination forward who can post up or he can step out to about 15 feet. He can put it on the floor. He gets to the basket. He has a knack for getting to the rim. He can finish, and he gets to the foul line. He knows how to use his body right around the basket. He played well on Bounce out of Canada. He’s a good get.”
Jalen Robinson 6′ 9″ 243lbs. F/C Columbus, Oh./Northland
Jalen Robinson became the first recruit in the class of 2012 for UD head coach Archie Miller when Robinson committed in June of 2011. The 6-foot-9 forward is a product of Ohio powerhouse Columbus Northland High School and was considered a top-five player in the state of Ohio for the 2012 class.
Robinson was named Ohio’s Division I co-player of the year by the Associated Press his senior year. He was also Division I First Team All-State, district player of the year and a finalist for Ohio Mr. Basketball. Robinson averaged 19.1 points and 11 rebounds while leading Northland to a 22-2 record his senior year. That team also boasted fellow Flyer recruit, Devon Scott.
Following his senior season, Robinson played in the Ohio North-South All-Star game where he had 30 points and 10 rebounds in a 116-114 win in the Division I-II game at Capital University.
As a junior, Robinson helped Northland to a runner-up finish in the Division I state playoffs while averaging 12.7 points, 9.7 rebounds, and 3.2 blocks per game.
Northland’s record over the last four years in 98-6, with two appearances in the Ohio Division I state finals. As a sophomore coming off the bench he averaged 5.7 points and 3.2 rebounds backing up one of the best players in the country, Jared Sullinger. The Vikings won the state championship in 2009.
Robinson was also a member of the 17U All-Ohio Red team that won the 2011 AAU national championship.
What they’re saying about Jalen Robinson – Steve Keller/The National Recruiting Report: “He’s got size. He’s strong. He’s got a chance, as time goes on and he develops one go-to back-to-the-basket move, to be a good center in the league.”
Chris Johnson/Hoop Scoop: “Jalen is a terrific low-post scorer. He’s got a nice jump hook. He’s got all kinds of low post moves. He’s got a solid jump shot out to 15 feet. He’ll get down and do a lot low-post scoring for Dayton.”
Devon Scott 6′ 9″ 215lbs. F/C Columbus, Oh./Northland
Devon Scott became the second commit from Columbus Northland High School as he joined teammate Jalen Robinson on the University of Dayton basketball team. Scott is a 6-foot-8 forward/center, who ESPN ranked as the No. 6 overall player in the state of Ohio and the No. 52 overall power forward in the country.
He is known as a terrific rebounder and a solid scorer on the low block. Scott was named Division I Second Team All-Ohio as a senior after averaging 17.2 points per game. He was also named First Team All-District.
As a junior, Scott averaged 11.5 points, 9.9 rebounds and 2.3 blocked shots per game. During his sophomore season, he backed up Boston Celtics’ forward and former Ohio State star, Jared Sullinger. Northland’s record over the last four years in 98-6, with two appearances in the Ohio Division I state finals, including a 2009 state championship.
Scott was also a member of the 17U All-Ohio Red team that won the 2011 AAU national championship.
What they’re saying about Devon Scott – Steve Keller/The National Recruiting Report: “He’s the get. What I saw from him, I really like him. He’s athletic. He’s fast. He’s active. He blocks shots. Devon Scott could be an all-league level player some day. Dayton got themselves a star in that kid.”
Chris Johnson/Hoop Scoop: “Devon is a big, strong, athletic low-post player. His offense has improved. He’s been more of a defensive player. He’s a decent shot blocker and a great rebounder. He’s very tough. He doesn’t mind getting in there and getting elbows in the face. He’ ll be a great defensive force inside for Dayton. Between these two they have really done a great job of working on the paint – Devon on the defensive end, and Jalen on the offensive end. Both of these kids (Robinson and Scott) are used to winning. Three of their four years they went to the state finals. They haven’t lost a game in their league in their whole four years at Northland.”
