BOONVILLE, N.Y. — The Adirondack Trail Blazers are growing weary of Leon Stimpson (Alvernia).
For the second time in as many games, the Geneva Red Wings came from behind in the late innings to defeat the Adirondack, and Stimpson had a hand in both rallies.
Leon Stimpson scampered home on a wild pitch to score the eventual game-winner as the Red Wings nipped the Trail Blazers, 4-2 in game one of the New York Collegiate Baseball League’s Eastern Division semi-finals at the Robert Smith Sports Complex.
With the score tied at two with one out in the eighth, Stimpson reached on a fielder’s choice. Fellow college teammate, Chris Ray (Alvernia) singled before a pair of Steven Bloodworth (Wagner) wild pitches brought home Stimpson with the decisive run.
Stimpson was one of four Red Wings with a pair of hits. He has six multi-hit games in his last ten.
Chris Murphy (TCU) struck out three, walked two and allowed two runs on seven hits for the win. The game marked the third straight in which Murphy has tossed eight or more frames. The Newark, DE native hurled a complete game on July 22nd striking out six and walking one as the Red Wings knocked off the Trail Blazers, 6-1.
Down two in the sixth, Geneva pushed a pair across the dish. Ricky Moses II (Southern) reached on an error before stealing a pair of bases. After Lukas Sokol (Toledo) walked, Robbie Enslen (Oakland) plated the first Geneva run with a base hit. Stimpson singled to load the bases, and Ray tied the score with a ground ball to the right side.
Grant Heyman (Miami) added insurance with a homer in the ninth. It was seventh home run in 59 trips to the plate this season for the 11th round draft pick of the Toronto Blue Jays. Heyman also walked twice.
Adirondack threatened in their last at bat. A pair of Geneva errors brought the winning run to the plate.
Zach Augustine (Johns Hopkins) retired the side for the save. Augustine pitched a scoreless ninth for the win Wednesday when the Red Wings brought home six in the ninth to defeat the Trail Blazers, 15-9 and clinch a spot in the playoffs. The Skaneatles, N.Y. native has six saves this season.
Eric Baker (Rogers St.) gave the Trail Blazers a 2-0 lead in the third with a two-out home run. After James Anderson (Harding) grounded out to lead the third, Kevin Hix (Youngstown St.) singled. Dezmon Nunn (Three Rivers CC) moved the runner with a sacrifice before Baker connected on his first blast of the playoffs and tenth of the season.
Stimpson had the game-winning hit, Wednesday.
Enslen has seven hits in his last 16 trips to the plate.
The series shifts to Geneva for game two. First pitch at McDonough Park is scheduled for 3 p.m.
