Ryan Sonberg drove in four with two hits.

UTICA, N.Y. — The Syracuse Jr. Chiefs sent 11 men to the plate in a seven-run eighth to blow open a one-run game and go on to defeat the Utica Brewers, 14-7 in New York Collegiate Baseball League action at Donovan Stadium, Wednesday night.

Alex Sanchez, Jr. (Ave Maria) plated Frank Salerno (St. Thomas Aquinas) and Tim Locastro (Ithaca) with one of his three hits on the night. Sanchez, Jr. is second in the NYCBL hitting .457.

Riley Moonan (Fairleigh Dickinson) kept the inning alive with a base hit scoring Sanchez, Jr. and Zach Lauricella (St.John’s).

Ryan Sonberg (Bates) reached on an error scoring Corey Caswell (Ithaca), and Moonan crossed the dish on a Brian Witkowski (Alvernia) ground out.

Sonberg capped a four-run third with a two-run home run that brought home Caswell.  The Windsor, CT native doubled home Moonan in the fifth for a 7-1 Syracuse lead.

Utica needed just two hits to score five in the sixth.

Matt Bahnick (Tallahasee CC) and Kenny Durling (Misericordia) led with back-to-back singles. Two hit batsmen, two walks, a sacrifice fly, and the Brewers trailed 7-6.

But that’s as close as Utica got.

Eric Striz (Ave Maria) allowed five runs on seven hits over five full for his sixth win without any defeats.

Jed Lehman (SUNY Binghamton) pitched a scoreless inning in relief.

Jordan Sechler (Arkansas Pine Bluff) took the loss giving up six runs on six hits in three frames of work.

Sanchez, Jr. finished with three hits in five trips with three RBI and three runs scored.

Sonberg drove in four.

Five Jr. Chiefs had multi-hit games.

Syracuse has a six-game lead in the Eastern Division with eight games remaining.

The Jr. Chiefs (24-8) have Thursday off before travelling to Geneva (11-21) on Friday to take on the Red Wings.

Utica (19-15) hosts Adirondack (18-14) Friday night in a battle for second place.
