HORNELL, N.Y. — The Hornell Dodgers used solid pitching and timely hitting to down the Geneva Twins 3-2 at McDonough Park on Wednesday. The Dodgers are 22-10 on the year with one week remaining in the regular season.
The Dodgers got on the board in the first when Kyle Danford (Texas A&M Corpus Christi) singled home Kevin Johnson (Pittsbugh) and Matt Calhoun (Harding) with two outs.
Geneva scored an unearned run in the third to cut it to 2-1 but Will Benenson (Franklin & Marshall) hit a long solo homer in the sixth inning to give the Dodgers back their two run lead. Benenson’s shot easily cleared McDonough Park’s 390 ft. center field fence.
Geneva answered right back with a run in the bottom of the sixth but the Hornell bullpen allowed nothing in the final three innings to seal the victory.
Eric Eck (Wofford) allowed seven hits in six innings of work to earn the victory in his first start of the season. He allowed one earned run while walking none and striking out eight. Tyler Wilson (Monroe CC) tossed 1.2 innings and Johnson recorded the final four outs of the game to earn the save.
No player on either team registered more than one hit in the contest.
Hornell, who has already clinched a playoff spot in the Western Division along with Olean and Niagara, holds a 2.5 game lead over Olean and a 3.5 game over Niagara in the standings.
