SHERRILL, N.Y. — Oliver Pratt’s solid start was ruined by a pair of homers as the Silversmiths fell to the Utica Brewers tonight. The right-hander foiled the Brewer hitters throughout his 7 1/3 inning-start, but made two mistakes that led to the 5-2 loss.
The first was an opposite field solo homerun for Eros Modena in the third. The second being a grand slam for Stephen Dezzi in the seventh that broke up a 1-1 tie. Aside from those two pitches Pratt was lights out: striking out six and retiring 14 Brewers via ground out.
Wes Van Boom was two-of-four with a solo homerun and Ernie Ruch had a double and scored a run for Sherrill.
Utica starter Miguel Navarro went all nine and struck out six. He improves to 4-0 on the year.
With the loss the Smitties fall to 12-19, they are tied with the Syracuse Salt Cats for fourth in the NYCBL Eastern Division. Utica improves to 19-13, good for second in the division.
Sherrill gets a night off before hosting the Geneva Red Wings, Wednesday night. First pitch at Noyes Park is scheduled for 5 p.m.
