BOONVILLE, N.Y. — Kevin Hix (Youngstown St.) drove in two with a single in the bottom of the tenth as the Adirondack Trail Blazers defeated the Utica Brewers, 7-6 in New York Collegiate Baseball League action at the Robert Smith Sports Complex, Saturday night.
Hix plated Dezmon Nunn (Three Rivers CC) and Chase Matheson (McHenry County) to end a seesaw affair which saw the Trail Blazers come from behind on three different occasions to take the lead.
Jesse Pintado (Miami Dade) gave the Brewers a 6-5 lead in the top half of the 10th with a sacrifice fly scoring Kenny Durling (Misericordia).
But the Trail Blazers rallied.
Matheson, Nunn and Cody Campbell (Rogers St.) received consecutive base on balls from Utica reliever, Marcus Crescenti (Indian River St.) to start the inning before Hix supplied the game-winner.
Hix went three-for-five five on the night. He led the sixth with a double and scored one out later when Gooch Greer (Carson-Newman) reached on an error. Miscues on consecutive plays allowed Greer to score and give Adirondack a 5-4.
Utica scored single runs in the second and third. Pintado started the second with a two-bagger and eventually came around on a fly ball by Steven Negron (Miami Dade). Stephen Dezzi (Univ. of Tampa) made it a 2-0 game with a leadoff home run in the third.
Kenny May (Lincoln) answered in the home half with a three-run shot to give Adirondack its first lead of the game. May’s third round-tripper of the season scored Eric Baker (Rogers St.) and Matthew Robinson (Georgia Coll & St. Univ.), and Adirondack led 3-2.
Sean Larson (SUNY Fredonia) started the game for Adirondack and surrendered four runs on five hits in five full. The right-hander struck out two and walked three.
Geoff Soja (Niagara) came on in the tenth with runners on the corners and retired the only two batters he faced for his first win of the season. The Fairport, N.Y. native has made 16 appearances for the Traill Blazers. He is leading the league with six saves.
Crescenti took the loss.
Jordan Sechler (Arkansas Pine Bluff) started and went eight innings for the Brewers. The southpaw allowed five runs (four earned) on seven hits and two walks with three strike outs.
The Trail Blazers (17-14) travel to Auburn on Sunday for a doubleheader with the Syracuse Salt Cats (12-19) at Falcon Park. First game is scheduled for 1 p.m.
The Brewers (18-13) host a 7 p.m. tilt with the Geneva Red Wings (10-18).
