UTICA, N.Y. — Stephen Dezzi (U. of Tampa) and Kenny Durling (Misericordia) paced an 11-hit attack as the Utica Brewers downed the Sherill Silversmiths, 7-6 in New York Collegiate Baseball League action at Donovan Stadium.
Dezzi’s two-out single capped a five-run seventh which saw the Brewers send ten men to the plate. Dezzi’s base hit brought home Brian Pruett (Coastal Carolina) and Eros Modena (Indian River St.) as Utica grabbed a 7-3 lead.
Donnie Dewees started the scoring reaching on a fielder’s choice in which Durling crossed the plate. Pruett gave the Brewers their first lead of the game with a single scoring Jesse Pintado (Miami Dade). Modena plated Dewees to round out the scoring.
The Smitties threatened in the eighth. Mitchell Iseneker (Mansfield), Taylor Hackett (Niagara) and Anthony Ragos (Davis & Elkins) worked consecutive base on balls to start the inning. Iseneker and Hackett came home when Brad Kaczka (Monroe CC) reached on an error. Byron Campbell (Maryland Eastern Shore) doubled home Ragos, and Sherrill had the tying run ninety feet away, but could not take advantage.
Tony DiMaio (Waubonsee CC) earned the win in relief. It was his first victory of the season.
Tyler Murphy (Southeastern) picked up his first save. He is 2-0 on the season.
Troy Loparco (Sullivan County CC) took the loss.
Dezzi and Durling each had a game-high three hits.
Both teams head out on the road. Sherrill (11-18) travels to Geneva(10-17) to take on the Red Wings. First pitch at McDonough Park is scheduled for 7 p.m. Mike Meleski (Broome CC) gets the start for Sherill while Aaron Benusis (Alvernia) goes for the Wings.
Utica (18-12) heads to Boonville to take on Adirondack (16-14). That is also a 7 p.m. first pitch. Jordan Sechler (Arkansas Pine Bluff) will start for Utica. Sean Larson (SUNY Fredonia) toes the rubber for the Trail Blazers.
