St. BONAVENTURE, N.Y. — The last seven days for the Niagara Power could easily be ranked among the most challenging in the history of the ball club. Life between the lines had been marked by stranded base runners and suspect pitching. Even in their two home victories earlier this week, the team had nearly squandered large leads before holding on for one run victories.
Outside the lines, the Boys in Blue had been forced to battle through the loss of catcher and team leader Frank Polino. The hometown kid, who so quickly became a fan favorite across the last two seasons with his contagious smile, positive outlook, and trademark toughness left a noticeable void both on and off the field. Polino is that rare type of clubhouse presence that will truly be missed.
When the sun rose on Sunday morning The Power were simply glad to be welcoming a new week. After see-sawing back and forth around the .500 mark for days, the team looked like a bunch searching for its identity. Many questioned whether the several waves of adversity this team had experienced were going to create enough pressure to force them to fold. All that changed on Sunday afternoon.
