GENEVA, N.Y. — Robby Enslen (Oakland) supplied bookends as the Geneva Red Wings scored eight in the first en route to a 17-3 throttling of the Sherrill Silversmiths in New York Collegiate Baseball League action at McDonough Park, Friday night.
Enslen was the first of five to reach safely in an inning where the Red Wings sent 14 to the plate without an extra-base hit. Enslen walked and eventually came home when Jess Puschek (Canisius) got to first on an error. In his second at bat of the frame, Enslen singled, and Brian Sullivan (Clark) came around to score. Chris Ray (Alvernia) plated Enslen with a base hit, and the Red Wings led 8-1.
Geneva put crooked numbers on the scoreboard in the second, fourth and fifth.
Grant Heyman (U of Miami) connected on a three-run blast in the second. Ricky Moses II (Southern U) and Lukas Sokol (Toledo) scored on Heyman’s first home run of the season.
In the fourth, Ray walked and eventually scored on a wild pitch. Puschek singled and scored on a double by Phil Rosenblum (Villanova).
Enslen provided more punch in the fifth with a three-run home run scoring Sullivan and Heyman.
Cam Stimpson (Monroe CC) came on in relief and struck out five in two shutout stanzas.
Derek DuBois (Clark) took the loss. The right-hander was responsible for all eight (two earned) runs in the first inning.
Enslen finished two-for-four with four RBI and three runs scored.
Puschek, Ray and Sullivan all had two hits. Paul Cotler (Penn) also added two hits for the home nine.
Mark Sherlock (Marywood) went two-for-two for the Smitties.
Heyman was selected in the 11th round of the 2012 MLB Draft by the Toronto Blue Jays. The Pittsford, NY native is the second player able to take advantage of a new rule granting eligibility to high school players chosen in the MLB Draft.
In order to be eligible for participation in the NYCBL, a student-athlete must have played one college season and have one season of eligibility remaining.
Chris Bostick was the first player granted eligibility under the amendment to league rules. Bostick played for the Webster Yankees in 2011. The Aquinas Institute graduate was taken by the Oakland A’s in the 44th round of the 2011 MLB Draft. Bostick currently plays with the Vermont Lake Monsters of the Class A New York-Penn League.
Geneva (10-14) hosts the first place Syracuse Jr. Chiefs (17-4) Saturday afternoon matinee. Matt Hockenberry (Temple) gets the ball for the Wings. Robert Frank (St. Thomas Aquinas) goes for the Jr. Chiefs. Game time at the “Big Mac” is 1 p.m.
Sherrill travels to Boonville to take on the Adirondack Trail Blazers. Action at the Robert Smith Sports Complex starts at seven bells.
