Brewers defeat Geneva,12-3 for fifth straight triumph

GENEVA, N.Y. — The Utica Brewers sent 11 men to the plate in a seven-run sixth and went on to defeat the Geneva Red Wings, 12-3 in New York Collegiate Baseball League action at McDonough Park, Thursday night.

Kenny Durling (Misericordia) led the inning with a solo shot before Zachary Loraine (Lindenwood), Blaine Tanner (Three Rivers CC) and Andrew McNett loaded the bases with consecutive base hits.  Brian Pruett (Coastal Carolina) reached on an error allowing Loraine and Tanner to score. Eros Modena (Indian River St.) plated McNett with a single, and Steve Negron (Miami Dade) did likewise to bring home Modena.

David Sharpe (Broward) came on in relief and scattered three hits over five shutout innings. The left-hander struck out four and walked none for his second win of the season.

McNett went three-for-four with two RBI and two runs scored.

Durling, Loraine, Modena, Negron and Tanner had two hits each.  Negron drove in two. Tanner scored three runs.

Utica never trailed in the game scoring single runs in the second and fourth.

Chris Ray (Alvernia) went two-for-four with one run scored for the Red Wings.

The win was the fifth in a row for Utica (15-11) who now has a game and a half edge over Adirondack for second place in the NYCBL Eastern Division.  The Brewers trail the Syracuse Jr. Chiefs (16-4) by four games.

Geneva (9-14) fell for the fourth time in its last five outings.

The Brewers host Adirondack, Friday night. A 7 p.m. first pitch is scheduled at Donovan Stadium.

Sherrill (9-15) visits Geneva, Friday night. First pitch at the “Big Mac” is also slated for seven bells.  Mike Meleski (Broome CC) will be on the hill for the Smitties. Aaron Benusis (Alvernia) takes the ball for Geneva.
