GENEVA, N.Y. — Nate Harris (Univ. of Dayton) made a seamless transition from relief to starting pitcher, and the Geneva Red Wings defeated the Lake Ontario Ridgemen, 7-6 in New York Collegiate Baseball League action at McDonough Park, Saturday night.
After collecting three saves in nine appearances out of the bullpen, Harris won in his first start of the season. The right-hander struck out two, walked one while he surrendered seven hits and three runs for the win.
Meanwhile the Geneva offense capitalized on three Ridgemen errors to score five in the fifth. Luke Stewart sparked the Red Wings with a one-out double. Stewart advanced to third on an error before scoring when a Michael Allen (Davenport) ground ball was mishandled. Nick Kranick (Flagler) followed with a base hit. Cody Walker (Chattahoochee Valley CC) singled and Allen scored from second when the play was botched in center field.
Adam Dickinson (Westmont) loaded the bases with a hit, and Dillon Hamlin (Seton Hall) singled and two unearned runs scored when Cayden Cuniff (East Texas Baptist) committed an error at home. Dickinson scored on a ground ball by Brent Poulin (Cuesta Coll).
Lake Ontario threatened in the eighth. Nick Flanagan (Martin Methodist) singled to start the frame. A.J. Crosby (Edward Waters Coll) followed with a home run. Cuniff kept the rally alive with a single. He moved to second on a passed ball and to third on fly out to right. Cuniff scored when Rob Groeschell (Lower Columbia Coll) reached on an error .
Stephen Joe (Copiah-Lincoln CC) set down the Ridgemen in order in the ninth for his first save of the season.
Hamlin led all batters with three hits. Stewart added two hits for the Red Wings.
Garrett Gooding (Point Loma Nazarene) took the loss. The left-hander struck out seven but allowed nine hits and seven runs. Gooding is now 0-3 on the campaign.
Cuniff, Flanagan, Groeschell and Kolbe Andrade (St. Petersburg Coll) had two hits apiece for the Ridgemen.
Harris notched a pair of saves when the Red Wings swept a doubleheader from Wellsville on June 19th.
Geneva (10-13) hosts the Niagara Power (10-8) on Sunday. A 3 p.m. first pitch is scheduled at McDonough Park.
After a day off, the Ridgemen (6-14) travel to Olean (12-8) on Monday for a 5 p.m. start with the Oilers.
Notes: The Athletes in Action were recently granted permission to change its team name to the Lake Ontario Ridgemen.
