UTICA, N.Y. — On a night when runs came at a premium, the Utica Brewers got one when they needed it.

Brett Dennis  lifted a fly ball to right field, and Kenny Durling (Misericordia) scampered home with the winning run as the Brewers defeated the Sherrill Silversmiths 2-1 in New York Collegiate Baseball League action at Donovan Stadium, Saturday night.

Durling led the ninth roping a full count pitch from Troy Loparco (Sullivan County CC) for a triple. Dennis provided the difference from there.

With the win, Utica improves to .500 at 5-5 and jumps into fourth place in the Eastern Division ahead of the Smitties at 4-6.

Sherrill jumped to a one-run lead in the second.

Mike Weakley (SUNY Brockport) led the inning with a single. The Liverpool, New York native moved to second when Hayden Hibbard (Cabrillo) was hit by a pitch. Weakley came home when Mitchell Iseneker (Mansfield) reached on an error.

Utica tied the score in the fourth. Jesse Pintado (Miami Dade) started the  frame with a single. Pintado stole second, Brian Pruett (Coastal Carolina) put runners on the corners with a base hit.

Pitcher, Tom Dybas (St. John Fisher) appeared to escape the threat when he snared a line drive off the bat of Andrew McNett and double Pruett off first. Steven Chagolla (Mt. San Jacinto JC) plated the run with a double.

Dybas struck out five and walked three while scattering eight hits over six innings.

Loparco took the loss. The lone hit he allowed scored the winning run.

Tyler Bowditch (Miami Dade) struck out four, walked four and allowed one run in six full.

Jordan Sechler (Arkansas Pine Bluff) hurled three shutout stanzas for the win.

Durling and Pruett collected two hit apiece.

The Brewers overcame four errors to win the game.

Sherrill hosts the Geneva Red Wings (5-2) on Sunday game time is 5 p.m.

The Smitties return to Utica on Monday for another 7 p.m. first pitch.
