SHERRILL — Mike Meleski (Broome CC) scattered seven hits over six-plus innings as the Sherrill Silversmiths (4-4) defeated the Geneva Red Wings (3-1), 4-3 in New York Collegiate Baseball League action at Noyes Park, Wednesday.
Meleski struck out four, walked two and allowed one earned run. The left-hander refused to surrender in the second and sixth innings when the Red Wings put two runners on base. Both times Meleski responded by ending the threat, getting a strike out in the second and an infield pop up in the sixth.
Brad Kaczka (Monroe CC) staked the Silversmiths to a 3-1 lead in the fifth with a double plating Ernest Ruch III (Mansfield) and Anthony Ragos (Davis & Elkins).
The Smitties added a run with a two-out rally in the sixth off Wing reliever Bryan Jagielo (Oakland). Mike Weakley (SUNY Brockport) doubled and moved to third on a balk. Ruch III walked, and Tyler Decker (Jefferson CC) delivered with a base hit.
Geneva put a single run on the board in each of the next two frames.
Phil Rosenblum (Villanova) connected for a pinch-hit home run in the sixth. It was the second round-tripper of the young season for the Berwyn Pa. native.
Jon Leroux (Northeastern) led the eighth with his first long ball of the season.
But that was as close as the first-place Wings would get.
Nicholas Douglass (Southern Maine) retired the side in order in the ninth fanning two for his first save of the season. It was fitting revenge for the left-hander who failed to retire a batter and allowed four earned runs when the Wings thumped the Smiths 9-2 on June 8th.
Joe Bocchino (Ave Maria) took the loss. The Fort Meyers, Fla. native held the Smiths to just two hits with six strike outs and five walks. Two of the walks led to runs as did two wild pitches.
Sherrill put a run across in the second. Wesley Van Boom (Brown) led with a walk. Bryon Campbell (Maryland Eastern Shore) reached on a fielder’s choice erasing Van Boom. Campbell stole second and moved to third on ground out by Weakley. Campbell scored on a wild pitch.
Chris Ray (Alvernia) and Leon Stimpson (Alvernia) led all with two hits apiece.
Leroux was the 32nd round choice of the New York Mets in the most recent MLB Draft.
The two teams will switch venues and meet Thursday night at McDonough Park. First pitch at the “Big Mac” is scheduled for 7 p.m.
