Give Bobby Bell and his Olean Oilers credit for making good on their first impression in the New York Collegiate Baseball League. The expansion Oilers sit atop the NYCBL’s Western Division with a record of five wins and two losses, and to the winners go the spoils.
Olean’s Brandon Nemeti (Erie) earns the NYCBL Pitcher of the Week, and Joe Pantano (Erie CC) garners the league’s Player of the Week.
Nemeti is 2-0 in his first two starts. The right-hander scattered four hits over seven-plus innings as Olean opened the season with a win over the Geneva Twins. He followed that with six-plus innings of work in a victory at Niagara Falls. The Lancaster, New York native has struck out eight while allowing three earned runs for an ERA of 1.93.
Pantano has collected a league-leading 16 hits. The Fredonia, New York native has six multi-hit games including a 4-5 performance when the Oilers defeated the then-first-place Hornell Dodgers. In 29 at bats Pantano has four extra-base hits to go with four walks and zero strike outs. He is also tied for the league lead with eight runs scored.
Olean travels to Webster tonight to take on the Rochester Athletes in Action. First pitch at “The Basket” is scheduled for 7 p.m.
