GENEVA — The Geneva Red Wings took advantage of opportunities given for a 9-2 victory over the Sherrill Silversmiths in New York Collegiate Baseball League action at McDonough Park, Friday night.
The Red Wings used three walks and two hit batsmen to explode for seven runs in the seventh to win for the second time in as many nights.
Luke Stewart (Broward) capped the explosion with a two-run home run. Paul Colter (Penn) scored on the play.
Geneva loaded the bases with a pair of free passes and a hit batter to start the inning. Dave Saluga (Youngstown St.) brought home the first run of the stanza with a walk. Richie Manzi (St. Anselm) scored on a Rickey Moses II (Southern U A) ground ball. Cameron Stimpson plated Jon Leroux (Northeastern) and Saluga with an RBI single.
The Red Birds put a single run on the “Big Mac” scoreboard in the second and fourth frames.
Joe Blair (Mid-Continent U) brought home Stimpson with a base hit, and the Red Birds led by one.
Moses II scored on a ground ball in the fourth.
Sherrill rallied in the seventh. Brad Kaczka (Monroe CC) and Mitchell Iseneker (Mansfield) scored a pair of unearned runs when a Mike Weakley (SUNY Brockport) ground ball was mishandled.
Jon Dunn (LeMoyne) struck out five over two and two-thirds for the win. The southpaw from Honeoye Falls, N.Y. held the Silversmiths without a hit.
Geneva starter, Aaron Benusis (Alvernia), hurled five shutout innings. The right-hander struck out two, walked one and surrendered three hits.
Leroux went 3-for-4 with a walk and a run scored. Earlier in the week, the New York Mets chose the Auburn, Mass. native in the 31st round of the MLB Draft.
Tom Dybas (St. John Fisher) struck out eight and walked four in six innings of work for the Silversmiths.
Sherrill (2-3) travels to Boonville, Saturday to play the Adirondack Trail Blazers (3-1). A 7 p.m. first pitch is scheduled at Robert Smith field.
Geneva (2-0) hosts the Syracuse Jr. Chiefs (1-2). First pitch at the “Big Mac” is also scheduled for 7 p.m.
