GENEVA — A sixth inning single by Ricky Moses II (Southern) proved the difference as the Geneva Red Wings downed the Syracuse Jr. Chiefs, 6-5 in New York Collegiate Baseball League action at McDonough Park, Thursday night.
Phil Blosenblum (Villanova) came around to score the eventual game-winner as the Red Wings won their opener.
Chris Murphy (TCU) worked one inning relief for the win.
The Jr. Chiefs grabbed an early lead scoring a single run in the first and adding a pair in the second.
Frank Salerno (St. Thomas Aquinas) led the game with a base hit and advanced on a sacrifice. Christian Knott (East Stroudsburg) worked a base on balls before the pair executed a double steal. David Wolak (Elmhurst) delivered with a ground ball to the left side of the infield.
Brian Witkowski (Alvernia) started the second stanza with a hit and moved to second when Alexander Sanchez Jr. (Ave Maria) reached on an error. Patrick McClure (Fairleigh-Dickinson) moved the runners with a sacrifice. Riley Moonan (Fairleigh-Dickinson) drove home Witkowski with a sacrifice fly. Salerno plated Sanchez Jr. with a double.
Geneva used a pair of long balls to push four across the dish in the third.
Beau Hauser (Dickinson) opened the frame with a walk. Leon Stimpson (Alvernia) followed with a first pitch bomb, and the denizens of “Big Mac” trailed 3-2.
The deficit didn’t last long.
One out later, Brad Blumer (Cameron) worked a free pass. Rosenblum delivered with a two-out shot, and the Wings took their first lead of the contest, 4-3.
Geneva extended its lead in the fourth.
Moses II walked to lead the inning. Two stolen bases later, Hauser plated the run with a ground ball to the right side of the infield.
Syracuse battled back.
Witkowksi brought home Wolak with a single in the fifth.
Knott tripled home Tim Locastro (Ithaca) to tie the score at five in the sixth.
Rosenblum held a handful of deuces getting two each of hits, runs scored, RBI and walks.
Sanchez, Jr. and Witkowski had three hits apiece for the visitors.
The Jr. Chiefs stranded 14 runners.
The Red Wings host Sherrill tonight with a 7 p.m. first pitch scheduled.
Syracuse travels to Utica on Saturday for a 7 p.m. tilt with the Brewers.
