Candice Dupree scores 13 in Phoenix Mercury season opener

DeWanna Bonner had 22 points, Candice Dupree added 13 points and rookie Samantha Prahalis had 12 points and six assists but four turnovers in her debut. The Mercury were done in by familiar weaknesses: not enough defense or depth. The Lynx reserves outscored the Mercury’s 40-8, and Minnesota owned a 40-28 rebounding advantage overall.

Aliyah Zantt  joins Xavier’s  2012 recruiting class 

The Xavier women’s basketball team has added its fifth signee from the class of 2012 in Reynoldsburg High School’s Aliyah Zantt. The 5’7 guard from Reynoldsburg, Ohio, helped lead the Raiders to a 26-1 overall record and a perfect 14-0 mark in Ohio Capital Conference play in 2011-12.

Shay Hayes joins the George Washington coaching staff

George Washington head women’s basketball coach Jonathan Tsipis announced today that Denitra “Shay” Hayes will join the Colonials’ staff as an assistant coach after spending the last two seasons on the sidelines at her alma mater, East Carolina University.

49ers women’s hoops and Habitat for Humanity

The 49ers women’s basketball players and coaching staff performed several duties last Friday. They dug holes to redo the foundation for a deck. They put up a couple of structures with allowed volunteers easy access to the roof.

Richmond’s two-sport athlete

As a kid, I can remember watching the 1999 Women’s World Cup when the United States beat China in penalty kicks. In that moment, I can remember jumping up and down in front of my television with my parents overcome with emotion.  Yesterday, when I put on the National Team uniform for the first time, it took my breath away. I was overcome with that same emotion as I stood listening to the Star Spangled Banner play before our game versus New Zealand on Saturday afternoon.

Emily Michael completes the Bonnies’ recruiting class

A four-year starter at Chaminade Julienne High School just outside Dayton, Michael averaged 10.8 points, 4.3 assists and 3.7 steals per game as a senior in leading the Eagles to a 22-3 record and district championship. She recorded a school-record eight 3-pointers in a game this past season and shot 38.6 percent from the 3-point line.

Lisa Stone named head women’s basketball coach at St. Louis

Stone’s 64-27 record at Drake included a 42-12 Missouri Valley Conference ledger. She led the Bulldogs to a 23-7 record, an MVC regular-season co-championship and an NCAA Tournament berth in her first season (2000-01). Stone, whose 23 victories were the most by a first-year MVC women’s basketball coach, was tabbed the league’s Coach of the Year. The following season, Stone’s team went 25-8, achieved a No. 20 national ranking and reached the NCAA Tournament Sweet 16.

St. Joseph’s women’s basketball keeping busy

Despite it being the offseason, the Saint Joseph’s women’s basketball team has been busy the past couple of weeks. In between studying for finals and conditioning, the Hawks have helped share their training secrets with PHL 17’s Ashley Johnson, while head coach Cindy Griffin has taken part in the “Real Women of Coaching” project at Drexel University.

Fordham women’s basketball donates time

The Fordham women’s basketball team donated its time to Kids Enjoy Exercise Now (KEEN) organization, on Saturday, May 5. KEEN is a non-profit organization that provides one-on-one recreational activities for children and young adults with mental and physical disabilities.

Suzie McConnell-Serio and Duquesne announce contract extension

Duquesne University Director of Athletics Greg Amodio announced today that head women’s basketball coach Suzie McConnell-Serio has agreed to a multi-year contract extension which secures her as the Dukes’ coach through the 2017-18 season.

LaSalle signs Karynda DuPree to National Letter of Intent

DuPree recently wrapped up her career at Wisconsin Lutheran, where she played for Coach Gil Tatge. DuPree averaged 10.2 points per game over her career, including 12.8 ppg as a senior while leading her squad to the second round of the WIAA Regionals. She also posted over nine rebounds and four blocks per game this past season.
