(BATAVIA, NY) — The Monroe Community College Tribunes took advantage of one final opportunity to prepare for the post-season.
Pat Moore (Webster, NY/ Webster Thomas) paced an 11-hit attack, and Vinny Bomasuto (Dunkirk, NY/ Dunkirk) went the distance as Monroe rallied for a doubleheader split on the road with an 8-3 triumph over Genesee Community College Sunday afternoon.
Moore put bookends on the third inning as the Tribunes batted around for seven runs. Down three, Moore led the frame with a double. After a Bobby Frantz (Webster, NY/ Webster Thomas) single, Danny Mendick (Pittsford, NY/ Mendon) brought home the first MCC run with single of his own.
The Tribs took advantage of a Genesee mistake. Brad Kaczka (Pittsford, NY/ Sutherland) looked to advance the runners with a sacrifice bunt but reached on a throwing error, and Frantz scampered home. Ralph Alloco (Rochester, NY/ McQuaid) drove home two more with a base hit.
After a Brian Dixon (East Amherst, NY/ St. Joseph’s) walk, Brad McDonald (Rochester, NY/ Greece Olympia) plated two when his sinking line drive beat the Genesee left fielder for a double.
Moore capped the rally with his second double of the inning scoring McDonald.
Bomasuto gave up three runs in the first three innings, but settled down and held the Cougars without a run for the final four. The right-hander struck out one and walked none for his second win of the season.
The Monroe infield turned a pair of double plays with McDonald starting both. Usually the back-up catcher, McDonald started at first in place of the injured Spencer Scorza (Penfield, NY/ Penfield) and made the most of the chance starting a 3-6-3 double play in the third. McDonald nearly repeated the trick in the fifth when he snared a line drive touched the bag at first and quickly delivered a strike to Alloco at second for the tag.
McDonald added to the defensive effort when he went to the ground and dug out a ball to erase the lead batter in the fourth.
Moore went 2-3 with a run scored and an RBI.
Bomasuto helped his cause going 3-4 with a run scored.
McDonald went 2-3 with 2 RBI and a run scored.
The Tribs finish the regular season 18-22.
The two teams along with Mercyhurst will battle in the Region III Division II tournament at GCC next weekend. Game times to be announced. The Tribs will go in search of the school’s 23rd regional title.
Sunday’s doubleheader, originally scheduled to be played at MCC was moved because of poor playing conditions at the campus on East Henrietta Road. MCC was the “home” team on Sunday batting at the bottom of the inning in both games.
